With the season opener happening tonight, Id like to get some player comparison debates going in order to see what the general consensus is.for these players at the start of the season.
I also plan on revisiting the debate at the end of the season to see if our opinions were valid or flimsy.
These four are all at the peak of their career with the exception of Lavine, who's injury riddled past has him just outside of his peak but still very effective. He shouldn't be overlooked when discussing the best 3 point shooters in the league and although Bane is going to get all the love as the best shooter on this thread, I think Lavine is much closer than people give him credit. He isn't the same off ball "catch and shoot" player Bane is, but when it comes to off the dribble, Lavine is arguably better. I don't think it's hyperbole to say Lavine is one of the best of all time at shooting from way behind the arc (he has some serious distance on some of those)pull up threes. So as shooters, I think it goes Bane, Lavine, Reaves and Bridges.
Now even though a lot of these guys are going to be asked to just space the floor for a good portion of their teams offensive possessions, shooting isn't everything and they all have different quirks to their game that help. Austin has a sick handle and is the best passer/playmaker imo. Mikal has length for days and can use that to shoot over his opponent at almost 60% on twos. Bane is also a good playmaker who played as THE guy at times Ja was out (so a lot).
Defensively it should be unanimous that Bridges is the best in this group. I like Bane as number two and then Austin and Zach are about the same imo.
Rank these players 1-4 for what you think they will be in the upcoming season.
My opinion is:
1. Desmond Bane
2. Austin Reaves
3. Mikal Bridges
4. Zach Lavine
I think Bane is going to feast with his open looks in Orlando just flying through screens and shooting open 3's created by Paolo and Franz. I also think he's a better defender than the credit he gets.
Austin and Mikal are a toss up for me as Austin is clearly the better offensive player and Bridges is in another league defensively. I'll take Austins offense for now as his numbers got better after the Luka trade.
Lavine is still really good at basketball. He's an efficient SG who shoots a ton of pull up threes. That isn't easy to come by in the NBA. If he can get his confidence back in his jumping ability, he could rise on this list.
