Most guys who get steals get them by gambling on passes. Ron Artest just rips the ball from cats. If he had a brain he'd be a top 5 player in basketball.
Agree nice observation too most Statistically good players get their steals playing the passing lanes Ron really rips it from you ... and his Strenght is great for a SF .. just his head that stops him from being great .. i dont know if he would be top 5 lol but he would be up there ..

Bruce Bowen, and Artest at 1, and 2 imo. I'de say Artest is probably #1 but it's close. Bowen just gets right up in your space, and crowds you, and is a key part of one of the best defensive teams in the league gaurding the best PG's to SF's every night. He ranks higher then Artest in defensive composite scores, but I'de like to see what Artest would do if all he had to do was defend, and had Duncan behind him.
Wallace has nice stats, but I don't think he's near the man to man defender of those 2.
I'de go
1. Artest
2. Bowen
3.Battier
4. Deng
5 Wallace
6. Prince
7.Howard
8. Marion
I think Balkman deserves to be way ahead of Melo.

Artest is the best IMO.
LeBron should be pretty high too (at least higher than the 11th in the OP).
I think best all around defender and best defender is the same thing btw.
If you're talking about who the most versatile defender who plays small forward is though, the list would change a little (though I'd still have Ron Ron at the top).

Artest.
I think my favorite Ronnie defensive play would be Channing Frye trying to post him up. Granted he's thin but Frye was putting 110% on backing him and not even moving him an inch for like 15 seconds.
He can't guard Dirk for some reason which is a shame because guys like him were born to shut down Dirk. And like one guy said, he's not good at chasing down people or against players with lightening quick first step (that's Bowen's specialty) but he's not a slouch in that area.

Yup, John Stockton was the same way (well, in that he got his steals largely on the ball), which makes his steals record even more ridiculous.
I think Ron's the clear number 1, particularly when you consider that he's also a better off the ball defender than Bowen, and when focused, is more dominant in man-to-man situations.
I actually think he does play off the ball too much for the Kings (less so this year), but that's mostly because he feels like he needs to do everything defensively sometimes.

If he could consistenly do it and not be hurt all the time .. maybe .. but im still not convinced hes better than Artest Or Bowen who seem to have the full packages .. his teammmate Battier i dont believe has been mentioned either who i consider pretty good .. not elite but pretty good
