Defense only: Duncan or Garnett

Post#1 » by bballcool34 » Sun Jan 20, 2008 12:33 am

Never seen this done before. Both our excellent defensive players in their own right- Garnett's more versatile, but Duncan's the better post defender.

Who is the better defender? And depending on your team's current defensive makeup, who would you rather have on your team for defense only?

Edit: In their primes.

This year? Garnett pretty easily.... Both in their primes? Duncan by a small bit.

I personally like Duncan more, he's anchored top defensive teams EVERY year he's been in the league and his superior shot-blocking and what I feel presence in the paint is more intimidating. I'd take him if I were building a team.

It's close though, close enough that I'd take Garnett for the Rockets because of his versatility and already having an intimidating presence down low.

Kg right now, but overall I'd take TD's defense, since I really like the fundamentals and intangibles he possess on the defensive

It's funny how you become a hater when a player gets moved to your division.

Fine I'm changing my vote to just "Tim Duncan". Happy now?

KG is definitely the more versatile defender but I like Duncan's impact around the basket more than KG's.

Hater.

Relax, you don't gotta change nothing for me, I wouldn't change my opinion for a homer like myself

KG is the more versatile defender. He can switch out onto the perimeter and guard just about any player on the floor.

But that is less valuable to me than Duncans more specialized, and superior ability to defend the post. He's also an excellent help defender around the basket.

I think it's a crime that Duncan has never won a DPOY. Big Ben should send him a fruit basket.

I agree with this post. Duncan is terrific at what he does, but remember, he has been in a perfect situation. SA has put together teams that were strong defensively elsewhere on the court, so all Duncan had to do was specialize, and he's terrific there. Garnett has played often with less talent, particularly defensively. People forget that KG was a SF, and bulked up over the summer to become a PF because that's what the team needed .. and then won the MVP.

I think Duncan is the better low-post defender, but Kevin Garnett, with his versatility and quickness, is the better overall defender. I suppose its just a matter of what your team needs.

EDIT: OK, I was leaning towards KG before, but now I'm giving it to KG completely. Duncan isn't guarding anyone when he's missing games.

Duncan easily mainly because KG cant handle bulky players.
