Isn't he an NBA champion and an ABA two time champ?
I'll admit I'm not old enough to have seen the Doctor play, but I've seen a few tapes and from what I've read, the guy was also a very good defender both weakside (2 steals and one block) and man defender. He was also a double digit rebounder while in the ABA and the first year he played in the NBA. Then factor in he was a dominant scorer which KG really has never been, I'd be inclined to take Erving, but again my opinion isn't too valid considering I haven't actually seen him play.

I don't understand this argument? Dr. J won in his league, so I don't get why you take KG to win in this league.
You think Dr.J would be as effective as KG in this league?
Dr.J is 6'7 so he'd be a tweener SF/SG.
Dr.J is a legend but anyone would be crazy to take him over KG to win in today's league.
I don't want to hear how today's league is soft or the hand check crap. Today's league is far tougher and talented than Dr.J's league. No disrespect to him of course.

If Garnett leads his team to a title this year, this will be something I might have to think about. As it it, Erving was by far the more dominant player IN TERMS OF THE COMPETITION THAT HE FACED . . . . which is the only way you can judge a player.
Whether that level of play was as good (the ABA wasn't, the NBA he played in was the Bird/Magic/era so most overservers think it was) is an argument but unlike Patterns, I don't automatically rate modern players over older ones.
I think Jordan would still be the dominant wing in the league, Erving would be either roughly even with LeBron (if using his ABA form) or in the mix at the next level (his NBA form) and Bird and Magic would also still be dominant players.

Just when I thought I can't hear something even crazier from you... Though this gem definitely takes a cake:
"If you want to win in this league, you take KG."
WTF? A guy who went past the 1st round ONCE in your opinion gives you better chances to win than NBA and ABA champion? How more fictious your arguments can be?! Let KG win a single ring and THEN talk about winning.
Plus this specific nonsense about Erving being "6-7" tweener. Since when 6-7 guys are SF tweeners, also in today's league (where even 6-5 Patterson and Bonzi Wells started at 3!)? Not to mention that: Dr J's skillset was better suited for SF; Erving measured in shoes would be like 6-8; he also was strong and had crazy hops/huge wingspan - so no matter how you look at it, calling him a tweener is simply ridiculous.
I don't rate Dr J as high as Doctor MJ (similarity of names purely coincidental

While as to you: apparently you're prejudiced not only against the 60s, but also the 80s, being the decade considered by so many "Golden Era" of the NBA. Whatever suits you; but you could at least get some knowledge about eras and players you're so easily dismissing, instead of talking stereotypes.
