Jose Calderon - #4 PG in league?

Post#1 » by treefi » Thu Feb 21, 2008 3:54 pm

Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Jose Calderon..?

Check out his last 11 games...

17.3ppg, 10.8apg, 70.9% field goals, 95.7% free throws, 62.1% on 3's, all that on only 1.9tpg... That's 5.7 assists per 1 turnover, folks! :o

Those are some sick statistics for 11 straight games.

Calderon is solid, everytime the Nets played the Raptors he'd usually torch the Mavs' new starting point guard

Stop with all the Calderon threads, now everyone is gonna accuse all Raptors fans of overrating him and get frustrated.

You're right. Not quite at that level for these last 11 games, but he has been playing on an All-Star level for a few months.

I've been resisting for a while, but it's time to start giving Calderon his due. The guy has been ridiculously efficient for two years now, and he's doing it as a starter this season. Statistically, he is indistinguishable from Nash. Heck, he's a little better going by PER. And he doesn't have Marion and Stoudemire to pass to.

Baron is still better, but it's tough to argue he's not Top 5.

I love Calderon, the guy is such a **** smart and efficient player..he isn't overrated whatsoever IMO..Raptors fans are just privileged that they get to see him play every game and enjoy what they have, so they make threads about it..

his D needs work, but that's pretty much about it..in the past, I thought that he lacked an attacking instinct, but he has improved on that in the past few months, and he's been taking it to the rim with confidence..great shooter, great passer, good clutch player..there really isn't anything left for him to seriously work on other than his D..it is more difficult to be considered a good defender when there isn't an anchor, and the only good MAN defender that starts with him is Parker, and he isn't elite by any stretch..

How is this for an argument: Chauncey Billups was voted as an all-star reserve by the coaches.
Jose Calderon was not.
Also, since all would agree that Billups is worse than Chris Paul and Steve Nash, that makes Calderon 4th, at best.
However, Jason Kidd (at least, by the fans), Baron Davis, and Deron Williams are widely considered better players than Chauncey, as well. That would make Calderon 6th best, at the most.
On top of THAT, Gilbert Arenas was injured who likely would have started over Jason Kidd in the East. This makes Calderon 7th best.
Then there's Allen Iverson (if you consider him a PG) and Tony Parker...

Calderon is a top 10 point guard. Absolutely.
Well...maybe. TJ Ford might be better.

Good points.

I can't rank Calderon ahead of Nash, Paul, Williams or Billups. I don't think he is better than Baron Davis either. That makes him no better than 6th.

You can then throw in Arenas, Parker and Iverson into the mix. That's more of a style question. Calderon is arguably a better pure point than either, but Iverson and Arenas are almost certainly better overall players, and Parker may be.

Kidd is tough to compare. What's more valuable, Kidd's defense or Calderon's shooting? It probably depends on the team.

So Calderon is 6th through 11th, depending on your criteria.
