Usually when comparing the two of these guys we usually go by who is better, however who would you take to start a franchise in an all time draft.

neither, Shaq is 36 and Hakeem is in his 40s.

Tough call. I think the difference is that you need to build a quite specific team around Shaq to make his team successful.
Hakeem you can surround with role players and still be in the hunt.
Shaq, however, reaches such an offensive peak that he's very tough not to pick him. Hakeem is nearly equal in impact, even though it's spread over both ends of the floor rather than on O.
Probably Hakeem, although I reserve the right to change my mind on a moment's notice.

I'd take Hakeem. Better defender and was the more complete player.
Shaq was such a force in his prime, is tough to go agints him, but Hakeem was just such a smooth big man. I'll never forget the abuse Shaq took from him in the Fianls, Shaq was young d Hakeem was in his prime, but still

until this question is redeined to say taking them both out of college and starting a franchise with them, any answer is wrong.
*edit*
question is now changed, so I pick Hakeem. IMO he is the better player on both ends of the floor and has far more post moves. Plus, you can't pick against the spin fake master. I feel bad for Hakeem, one of the all-time greats, but he played during the Jordan era.

I traditionally answer to this question: Hakeem by a very slight margin. I reckon overall impact of these two is almost identical (also Shaq's prime wasn't really shorter like some people say since Olajuwon perfected his dream moves only like in the beginning of the 90s), so the thing that decides for me is better influence on team chemistry. I mean, look at Diesel's relationship with Penny or Kobe compared to Hakeem's coexistence with Drexler, Pippen or even Barkley. Dream wasn't also such a coach-killer as O'Neal and changed franchise only once. So whom you'd finally trust more while building a team? To me the obvious answer is Hakeem.

Shaq was more efficient shooting than Hakeem and had more bounds and blocks during that Finals; it was Shaq's teammates that let him down.

I would take the Diesel. In his prime, nobody, and I mean nobody could stop the Diesel

I take Shaq. He was unstoppable in his prime AND he would bring many $$$ because he is so popular and open with the media. Ppl often forget that Hakeem was quite a jackass in his early years and dropped off just as badly as Shaq when Dream turned 35.

Frankly speaking you don't seem to be very consistent when rating Russell over Wilt and Kareem AND at the same time picking Shaq - lesser Wilt over Olajuwon - lesser Russ, though with better offense .

Shaq is my guilty pleasure. Ever since he reduced that basket to a pile of rubble, I just dig that guy.

If I am inconsistent with him, I am at least honest about it

I would take Hakeem,he has the range has the post moves can defend and can score at will...he was just a complete player and i was in awe on what he did to David Robinson in the playoffs where he left him clueless and stunned.

I'll take the guy who was dominant at both ends over the guy who was dominant at one.

Shaq has been traded 3 times and has played with 4 different teams.... Hakeem played his entire career with one team except for his last season... Shaq doest rub me as the type of player that is loved by everyone on the team... Dream on the other hand will make the players around him better.

Not to lend support to either side with the comment but of the teams for which Shaq has played, 3 have made the Finals and two have won at least one title. I'd hardly use the fact that he's been traded as a fact of any consequence or significance.
