Chris Paul's 2008 vs Magic's 1987

Post#1 » by MT1983 » Sat Apr 5, 2008 5:48 am

Let me start off by saying I am in no way shape, or form, saying that Paul is even in the same galaxy as Magic overall. But my question is, how does Paul's 2008 stack-up against Magic's 1987 (i'm assuming most agree '87 was his best year).
It took 10 frickin' years, but we've finally got a legitimate franchise player to lead us back to the top.

They stack up well in the sense that Paul is a superb player. But those respective seasons don't stack up well in the sense that 1) Paul hasn't done it in the playoffs while Magic has, and 2) he simply does not do the things Magic did intangibly, which is obvious just by observing them play.

This is the sort of things statistics are poor at measuring. Magic did a number of things intangibly better than Paul will ever be able to do; namely get players the ball in just the right position a huge majority of the time, thanks to 2nd-to-none vision and a 6'9" frame that greatly helped him see over defenses. Magic was the master at feeding the hot hand and was better than anyone in history on the break and relentless in that regard too.
