Yao vs Dwight by the Numbers this season.

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Sun Apr 20, 2008 5:33 pm

This is how they compare this season.

Dwight vs Yao by the numbers

Dwight Howard
20.7 PPG / 14.2 RPG / 1.3 APG / 0.9 SPG / 2.1 BPG / 3.2 TPG / 60% FG / 59% FT / 61.9% TS% / 22.9 PER

Yao Ming
22.0 PPG / 10.8 RPG / 2.3 APG /0.5 SPG / 2.0 BPG / 3.3 TPG / 51% FG / 85% FT / 58.7% TS% / 22.5 PER

If you could only have one of them for 1 year only and based on the numbers above and being healthy which player do you take?

I'd take Yao if he's healthy..but he never is..

I love Yao's game..he has a solid post game..good range..great passer for his position..good defender..the only problem I see with Yao is the health, which might not ever change..

both guys have turnover problems at times..

Easy decision for me... Dwight

More rebounds and blocks and more efficient

I'd take Dwight. He's an amazing rebounder and is really improving his offensive game and while Yao's good, I feel that Howard would provide more at the center position.

Yao, I've seen Joel Przybilla neutralize Howard, the same can not be said for Yao.

Yeah, that tenth of a block makes a big difference.

FTA attempts is a very important stat that should be taken into consideration (gets your team into the bonus earlier, gets the opposing center into foul trouble, which can be huge):

Dwight - 10.9 fta/g
Yao - 7.4 fta/g

Based on their stats alone (and thus ignoring defense, leadership, injury history, age, etc.), I take Dwight for the huge rebounding advantage and large fta advantage, since they are roughly the same otherwise (in terms of their stats).

Yao. He wins more games and is MUCH more dominant on the offensive end regardless of what the stats show.

If you feed Yao he'll score.

Wins more games? That may be the most ridiculous thing stated in this thread.

If you feed Dwight, he'll score. At a much better clip than Yao

Dwight easily. Dwight is a better defender and by a large margin. Better opponents PER. Did anyone see how he dominated toronto in the playoffs by just his defense and rebounding? Players were scared just to shoot over him. Offensively Dwight is more versatile and more efficient. His back to the basket game may be a little weaker but it is extremely effective. Yao is only effective with the ball in his hands in the post. Dwight can get baskets by running down the floor, moving without the ball in a halfcourt setting, and cleaning up on the boards. He can just do those things and end up with 25 points. And he can just as easily do it in the post too.

Statistically they're pretty much on the same line.

Yao is in his prime while Dwight is still raw and far far away from his prime. The fact that Dwight already puts up (slightly) better numbers at this age compared to Yao is crazy. Dwight also is improving on his FT shooting which is also a big plus, he shot like 8 for 9 in his first playoff game of the year. He's also had a crazy playoff game. I watched that game and he was just SICK, a one man wrecking team. The fact that he gets his 20 PPG without that many touches is admirable, he really fights for his points, putbacks, offensive rebounds dunks etc. Defensively he's just sick, I mean really really sick. He's better then Shaq defensively, especially when he turns it on. Much of that has to do with his athletic figure, he's tall and really muscular. His help-D is great. Sometimes he coasts on D and he looks mediocre but when he really is fired up defensively he's huge.

I take nothing away from Yao, I like him a lot too and I think he's one of the best centers to play the game, ever.

Better defender by a large margin? Yao is a much better post defender than Dwight while Dwight is a better help defender. Watch some games before you talk garbage.

Dwight is a better defender by a large margin. Yao is a better post defender based on what? Dwight has a lower opponents PER than yao. But Yao is a good individual defender if you just try to back him down in the paint but he is fairly easy to get by in face up situations. Dwight can guard a variety of players while yao is limited. Help defense thus basically team defense is more important being a big man than individual defense because the majority of the time you won't put your superstar big man on the opposing teams best low post scorer the whole game. Dwight is a good individual defender anyway. Dwights defense in the toronto playoff game is a perfect example if you caught it.

I like Howard and all..but Toronto isn't a good example when you're talking about a big man dominating..I like the Raptors, but they are known as a soft/finesse team..

also, Dwight is MORE VERSATILE offensively? come on..I don't wanna hate on Howard's game, because he's definitely improved the weaker aspects, but he still lacks a consistent jumper and consistent post moves..he's also still a weak passer..

I'm not one of those idiots that says, "Dwight sucks, all he can do is dunk"..if he can dunk on everybody, he should..that's the best and most efficient shot he can take..but he isn't more versatile than Yao, so if the situation came where a defender was strong enough to keep Howard from getting too deep in the paint, I'd take Yao..

there aren't many guys that can contain Howard though..it's scary how good he could become..

Based on this year's numbers, Howard; based on this year's performance (up to his injury), Yao.

I'm a huge fan of both players, but that rebounding advantage by Dwight is what sets him apart from Yao, IMO... the rest of the stats are much too close to call (except for FTA and FT%)

I think his rebounding numbers are a bit skewed this season. Who else could get those rebounds? Shard? Turkoglu?

Dwight is known to battle his own teamates for rebounds
