Who does Brandon Roy resemble from the old days?
Brandon Roy is one of my favorite players to watch in this league. Despite his young age, he demonstrates the same level of maturity that many league veterans have. His basketball IQ is highly underrated, and while his IQ is not as good as Duncan's, his mental approach does remind me of Tim Duncan - but in a SG body. However in terms of his physical skills, I am not sure who he resembles among players who played in the old days. For those who have seen basketball ranging from the early 60s to the late 90s, who would you say he's most similar to?

This is a toughie....
Roy's game is very unique. I'm not sure I recall a player quite like him. He moves a pace that is very calming and smooth, sort of like Ray Allen with more PG skills, yet is very explosive with a deadly crossover at the same time. He has mastered the fundamentals of his game and doesn't solely rely on his athleticism (which is underrated, BTW), that's why I think he will be around for a long time. I'm not old enough to properly analyze players from the 60's and 70's, so I may be a tad ignorant here, but I've never seen a player quite like Roy. I'm sure there are a lot of comparisons that could be made though.

That's sort of insulting.

Sounds a bit like Grant Hill (before the injuries)

To whom?
Maybe because his career later sagged, people have forgotten how good JJ was early on?
His first 3 seasons went 16/4/5...19/5/5...and 26/5/4. And his assists were down because he was playing alongside Jason Kidd.
He was 6-6, 220, could play lead but mostly off the ball, and like Roy averaged about a steal a game on D.
I'm not seeing the insult either way. Actually they look pretty damn bang on, to me. Roy shoots better from the outside, and JJ could muscle up to play the 3 more, but I can't think of a closer parallel up top this point.
Now to keep on pace, Roy needs to score about 26 a game next season.

The stats are similar, but their play style is different. JJ was more of a shooter, Roy a slasher.
And I'll be honest, I didn't ever see JJ play in his early days, just his latter, so the insulting comment could probably be disregarded.
Roy deffinetly won't average 26 ppg next season, nor would I hope for him to.
To me I like the grant hill comparison, except I think Roy has a better outside shot, but without the strength that a younger hill possessed.

1. Hal Greer
2. Moncrief (w/o the defense)
3. DJ (on his best day)
4. Bing (hes not realy close to him but his game is similar. hes a very poor mans Bing)
5. Blackman
6. Scott
He reminds me a little of Fat Lever but hes not close the defender.

That list is a bit confusing because the players are so different.
1. Greer was an undersized combo guard but much more a pure midrange jump shooter with good catch and shoot skills who could handle. Not as long or athletic as Roy, but a higher motor.
2. Moncrief without the sick defense I could see. Versatile all around player able to play 3 positions and with both a good drive and a solid midrange game. Doesn't seem to be as efficient offensively, but also doesn't have as many offensive weapons to draw off double coverage nor is he as injury prone as Moncrief. Again, less of a motor, Moncrief was one of the most relentless two way players ever.
3. DJ . . . on whose best day, DJ's or Roy's? More the older DJ when he played for the Celts than the younger DJ of the Supersonics . . . that's pretty good company though Roy again is outclassed defensively.
4. Can't see this either. Bing was a shooter, pure and sweet, liked to shoot a lot of leaners and relied on speed and quicks, not size.
5. Blackman is a nice comp. Quiet, steady, good midrange and good size to post up smaller guards; Roy's handle is better.
6. Which Scott: Byron, Charlie, or Dennis? . . . though all three again are long range gunners who would gladly jack up three pointers. Much quicker and more athletic than Dennis, not the gunner that Charlie was (though physically the most similar player), Byron was more an undersized catch and shoot two (though playing next to Magic, that's what you needed).
I'd go with Rolando Blackman with better handles; a solid do it all 2 with good size.

I've heard and read comparisons to Walt Frazier before, but having never seen Frazier play live, I can't personally agree. Although, everything I have heard of Frazier, and the little I have seen of clips, I would love if Roy became anything like him.

Hmmm.
I guess it's all subjective, but imo JJ was VERY MUCH a slasher early on. I wouldn't actually be surprised if Roy takes jumpers more often, and from farther out, but that's not based on checking numbers, just an impression.
