Raymond Felton vs TJ Ford

Post#1 » by joew8302 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 12:55 am

Who would you rather have? I am a Pacer fan trying to get a good read on Ford by putting him against other PG's.

Ford is probably the better player, but he's also got more baggage. I'd take Felton pretty easily.

As a Raps fan who considers himself fairly bias-free (not too homerish), I feel like TJ is a far, far better player (as long as he stays healthy, obviously). Last season his per 36 minutes stats were:
18.5 ppg (.469/.294/.880), 9.4 apg, 3.0 rpg, 1.6 spg

And the main reason he didn't play 36ish mpg is that he was on a team with another very good pg, Jose Calderon. If TJ is healthy, I think you could expect him to put up at least 16/8, on fairly good percentages, while making solid decisions for the most part (every so often he still goes into "me-J" mode, but he generally runs the team well, and has certainly matured over the years).

Also, re: TJ's "baggage," the only time he was a locker room problem at all was when he lost his starting job after coming back from injury. Otherwise he's been an excellent teammate, well liked by the coaches and players.

TJ is easily the better player. He scores better, creates better and generally has more impact in a game.

Felton averaged 14, 7 & 3 per 36 minutes so it's not like he's a slouch. I'm not saying he's better than Ford, but those are fairly respectable numbers. And the baggage I was referring to include his injury concerns. Everytime he hits the floor you hold your breath. He's been in the league for 5 years and already missed 2 entire years worth of games. Felton on the other hand has missed a grand total of 9 games over his 3 year career.

Yeah, he gets 14 points on 41% shooting and 7 assists with 2.7 TOs - Ford, in 13 fewer minutes, is scoring 12 points on 47% shooting and getting 6 assists with 2 TOs. He just does a LOT more while he's on the floor and he does it more efficiently.

Both underrated players.

I pick TJ because the teams he helms have a tendency to make it into the playoffs. The Bucks made the playoffs with him but missed when he was hurt. They haven't been back since dealing him to Toronto and the Raptors immediately got to the postseason, and were there with every year of TJ.

I like Ford better.

Uhh...I take Ford here, without even a moments hesitation.

I really hope this guy gets enough playing time in Indiana to show what kind of an impact player he can be. My prediction is that by this time next year, you won't ever see a Ford vs. Felton thread around these parts again.

Pretty easy comparison here. TJ almost has the same numbers in a lot less minutes and is much more efficient. TJ is going to put up some very pretty numbers this year. I think a lot of people who haven't seen much of him are going to be suprised with how good he is.

Man, thanks for the responses. I am pretty excited to see what TJ can do in Indiana next year. Felton was a guy that always killed the Pacers, so I thought he would be a good comparison.

As a Bobcats fan, I have to say... TJ.

The injury thing is the only real issue. Plus sometimes TJ completely loses it during a game and tries to "take over" and shoots 10 shots in a row or something. But that's rare. Overall, from past production, when healthy, it's TJ.

Felton has one more year with a real coach (larry Brown) to either improve or be relegated to backup PG for some team somewhere.
