In my opinion, there are only a few players which deserve consideration: Malone, Barkley, and Baylor. Perhaps John Stockton, Reggie Miller, and Patrick Ewing, but they're a tier below in my opinion. Who's the best of the bunch?
Follow-up: You're starting a new franchise, and you can build around any of these players to begin. Who do you pick?

Well I don't know about best player, but I'd build it around Patrick Ewing. Barkley my second choice.

Malone.
If I was starting a franchise I'd take Malone or Ewing.

Karl Malone, Elgin Baylor, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller, Pete Maravich, Dominique Wilkins, George Gervin
Baylor's number were ridiculous, but then again, he did play during a time when their was a huge gap between decent players and good players.

Barkley, Malone, maybe Baylor.
What I think would make a better topic is "Who's the best player never to win a championship as the best player?" I mean, this topic can turn into a Malone vs. Barkley thing for 4 four page, and that's cool. But who's the best player who couldn't win a championship as a #1? There's an interesting question.

Re: Best player never to win a championship?
i really don't like putting Stockton and Malone in this, because the real issue is that "the best player who never got any help", Stockton and Malone had each other to help carry the load, while guys like Dominique, Ewing never really got any help. a guy like Barkley got help when he played with KJ and Olajuwon.
