Phelps is 3/3 so far with 3 gold medals and 3 world records. Hes tied with the most gold medals won by an olympic athlete with 5 more events to go this year alone.... He will be the most decorated olympic athlete of all time, and by a large margin.
Michael Jordan was very, very, very good but he did also have several players helping him out. For the most part (Other then team events) Phelps has to beat everyone every time he races.
Personally I think If you were to rank Woods, Phelps, and Jordan it would go in that order...

Phelps easy, a better comparison would have been Woods, Federer or Armstrong. Comparing a player in a team sport to one in an individual sport is impossible.

phelps isn't some johnny come lately.
Michael Fred Phelps (born June 30, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American swimmer who holds world records in several events. Phelps won eight medals (six gold, two bronze) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens,[1] which tied the record for most medals at one Olympics, a record set by Alexander Dityatin in 1980.[2] Phelps' international titles, along with his various world records, have resulted in him being named World Swimmer of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and American Swimmer of the Year in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007...With 28 world records (24 individual, 4 relay), as of August 2008, Phelps is approaching Mark Spitz's record of 33 world records (26 individual, 7 relay).

You have to take into consideration the players' respective sports. Phelps does not rely on other teammates (i mean, there's drafting and the relays) nearly as much as Jordan did. Basketball is a team sport, while swimming is pretty much a solo event.
But I mean, judging on sheer dominance in their respective sports, i'd have to go with Phelps, easily. The man is shattering WORLD records left and right. Winning gold medals like they were nothing. Jordan is the most dominant athlete the NBA has ever seen, but Phelps, IMO< is in another level when it comes to dominance.

Ok, I know who Phelps is. I've watched him plenty of times, I watch some of the swimming competition, sadly (only because my brother is a swimmer in my local area and he likes to watch).

eh, if you knew who phelps was there is no way you just brush him off like you did. mvps? phelps has 10 combined. titles? phelps has 9 gold medals. records? phelps has 28 world records, closing in on the most all time.
what exactly makes this jordan EASILY?

I like MJ, but I gotta go with Phelps here. He is just demolishing his competition left and right, and will probably get his 10th gold medal tomorrow. A World record. At 23!

Ok, I didn't realize he had that many. I mean, I guess you can put him over the top since he dominates his sport. But people are underrating what Jordan has done in his career. I don't think you can really make this comparison anyways, like people said, individual sport vs. team sport doesn't really go together.

Phelps is the greatest swimmer of all time right now, and he's still got another Olympics in him to get another few Gold Medals. Assuming he wins at least another 4 in this Olympics, and say 3 more 4 years from now, you're looking at a grand total of 16 Gold Medals when the next closest is 9. Then to think it could even be possible for him to get 5 more in this Olympics and 4 in 4 years from now, and he's doubled the next closest athlete.
From there you are looking at greatest athlete of all time, not just better then Jordan.
That puts him up with the Muhammad Ali's and the Babe Ruth's of the world.

Swimming is so much easier to dominate that it's not even fair comparison...

Phelps vs Jordan is apples vs. oranges...they're both legends but it's hard to really compare because they're totally different sports. It's easier to compare Tiger to Phelps. At least they are in the same realm of individual competition.
