Dream Team Vs. Redeem Team

Just for fun, If these two teams were to go head-to-head in a FIBA officiated setting, man-to-man defense, who would win? state your reasoning. Here are the matchups:

PG:

Magic Johnson/ John Stockton Vs Jason Kidd/ Chris Paul/ Deron Williams

-Magic wasnt really effective at this stage of his career and as skilled and intelligent as Stock was, the D-Will/Paul combo would be too much to handle..Advantage Redeem Team

SG

Michael Jordan/ Clyde Drexler Vs. Kobe Bryant/ Dwyane Wade/ Michael Redd

This is tough, between Mike and Clyde, there was ridiculous athleticism, speed, playmaking, defense and versatility. You could argue that The Kobe/Wade with Redds outside touch could cause trouble but in the end, only one team has the GOAT..Advantage Dream Team

SF

Larry Bird/ Chris Mullin/ Scottie Pippen Vs.Lebron James/ Tayshaun Prince

As much as i love Pip, i doubt he has any shot at keeping James in front of him. Mullin who was an offensive machine back then(about 26ppg) could be bothered by Prince's length and tenacity. LeBron will also give Pip all he can handle on the defensive end. Larry Legend would be a bit of a non-factor here because of his age, injuries and decline at that time Advantage..Redeem Team

PF

Charles Barkley/Karl Malone/Chris Laetnner Vs. Carmelo Anthony/ Chris Bosh/ Carlos Boozer

IMO, this is where the Dream Team could win the game. Melo, Bosh and Booz have little to no chance at stopping Sir Charles or Malone. its a plain physical mismatch, and Malone was fleet enough to step out and guard Melo on the perimeter..Advantage Dream Team

C

Patrick Ewing/ David Robinson Vs Dwight Howard

 ...ADVANTAGE Dream Team

Dream Team wins because of the frontcourt matchups...too much size and shooting touch up front with great interior defense.

The Dream Team has an advantage at every position, except possibly SF just because Bird was pretty much injured. I'll take a Pippen/Mullin rotation over James/Prince too. Furthermore, the Dream Team has much better shooters, so this is going to be the Dream Team in a rout.

The point of the dream team was to put as many marketable stars on one team to market basketball to the world. Magic, Bird, Laetner, and a few others likely wouldnt have been on the team for pure basketball skills at those points in their careers. The dream teams goal was to spread basketball to the world moreso than play good basketball, because them winning the gold was a total garuntee.
The dream team goofed around and way too much fun on and off the court.
That being said, they still had much more talent then our current team, especially at PF, C and SG.

However, our current team is playing better because we are playing to win, and we are less cocerned with the marketing aspect. We go out there trying to kill the other team. I mean absolutly take no prisoners. We are likely playing basketball at the highest level it has ever been played, and possibly will ever be played. Enjoy it, we are watching history.

The Dream Team is too big and would win easily.

However, this would be today's Dream Team.

5) Tim Duncan/Dwight Howard/
4) Kevin Garnett/Elton Brand/Chris Bosh/
3) LeBron James/Ron Artest/
2) Kobe Bryant/Dwyane Wade/
1) Chris Paul/Deron Williams/Baron Davis

Head Coach: Gregg Popovich
Assistant Coach: Phil Jackson
Assistant Coach: Nate McMillan
Assistant Coach: Don Nelson
Assistant Coach: Tom Thibodeau

Now that team could compete with the Dream Team.

The real Dream team would NOT lose to that.

Pretty good list but there's not enough 3-pt shooting on that team for me. I'd replace Brand with a quality shooter. K-Mart/Redd

since they had some players over the hill this is how i would put a 'redeem team'

Deron Williams/Chris Paul
Kobe Bryant/Dwyane Wade/Brandon Roy(he can run the pg too)
Lebron James/ Paul Pierce/ Caron Butler
Tim Duncan/Kevin Garnett/ Chris Bosh
Shaquille O'neal/Dwight Howard/Emeka Okafor

you'd have a hard time cherry picking an all-time team that would have a shot at the original. so drem team easily imo

One thing that we are ignoring is that the original dream team was put together and had no time to grow chemistry. This team has been together for 3 years and everyone understands their role.

I'm not saying Redeem would win, but you certainly have to take that into consideration when taking a 92 Olympic against 08 Olympic team, one team was better prepared than the other.

that actually would be pretty easy - just off the top of my head

Wilt/Shaq/Russel
Duncan/KG
LeBron/Dr. J
Kobe/Wade/West
Oscar/Paul

I'm sure I could do better, but that team would wipe the floor with the dream team. And this year's team is being seriously underrated because people are looking at the complete career of those guys (when several were clearly out of their prime) vs this year's team who's careers are still incomplete. I'm not sure who would win, but it'd be pretty close. The problem would be the front court, but we'd build this team a bit differently if the dream team was on the list of opponents.

History is going to rate this year's team very high. The margin of victory is very high (32.2) against an international field that is clearly much better than 16 years ago. We just beat a team that has a former MVP by 49 points.

Just read where Malone has his right hand... OWN!

No way the redeem team's front court can beat this...

wait, I just revised the cherry pick team - put dennis Rodman on there to play against Malone. Those two going at each other was always top flight entertainment.

Woah... slow down buddy... Talk about overrating a player a bit too much. Isaiah Thomas, Bob Cousy, Lenny Wilkens and Carlos Arroyo could be put there, but not CP3.

I said off the top of my head - unless there was a clear disadvantage, I left the players from this year's redeem team. I put oscar in to match with magic and figured paul's speed would give give stockton trouble.

Why not say Earl Boykins.. lol... Not saying its only you, but a lot of people count CP3 like he is already a Hall of Famer. I remember in the player comparison's thread, someone was calling him out as a HoF.

Anyways... Karl MalOWN vs. Carmelo Anthony... lolz

Magic "wasn't really effective at this stage in his career"?!? Not to be the sensitive homer guy who nitpicks, but how can this statement possibly be true?

Little more than a year before Barcelona he was coming off a 19.4-point, 12.5-assist, 7.0-rebound season with the Lakers. He was also months removed from winning the All-Star Game MVP despite sitting out the entire season after announcing he was HIV positive. Hell, four years after 92, at 36, he averaged 14.6 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in 30 minutes a game off the bench -- damn good numbers for an aging player who hadn't played NBA basketball in five years.

To sum, Magic was still one of the best players in the world when he played with the Dream Team. He and absolute prime Stockton give the Dream Team a decided edge over this year's team -- and that's coming from someone who has a huge amount of respect for both Paul and Williams.

Great, great players, but not Magic/Stockton great. Not yet, anyway.

The Dream team would dominate at SG and SF positions, your team would win in the battle at Center, but the Power Forward and Point Guard competition would be epic.

Put it this way. The 1996 team is still better than the 2008 team

This was the 1996 Team.

John Stockton
Mitch Richmond
David Robinson
Gary Payton
Scottie Pippen
Shaquille O'Neal
Reggie Miller
Hakeem Olajuwon
Karl Malone
Anfernee Hardaway
Grant Hill
Charles Barkley

they won by an average of 33 ppg.
