20 Great NBA Coaches of All Time -- #6

Post#1 » by penbeast0 » Thu May 21, 2009 11:29 pm

The 20 Greatest NBA Coaches Poll
1. Red Auerbach
2. Phil Jackson
3. Pat Riley
4. Greg Popovich
5. Larry Brown

Code: Select all

Multiple Coach of the Year Winners

Larry Brown 4 (3 ABA)
Pat Riley 3
Don Nelson 3
Alex Hannum 2
Bill Fitch 2
Bill Sharman 2 (1 ABA)
Tom Nissalke 2 (1 ABA)

My personal favorites -- Slick Leonard, Doug Moe, or Stan Albeck?

Don Nelson 29 years (11 with Milwaukee) / 3x Coach of the Year / no championships
Career NBA 2316 1309 1007 .565

Jerry Sloan 23 years (20 with Utah) / no championships
Career NBA 1888 1137 751 .602

Jack Ramsay 21 Years (10 with Portland) / 1 championship (Portland)
Career NBA 1647 864 783 .525

Red Holzman 18 years (14 with Knicks) / 1x Coach of the Year / 2 championships (New York)
Career NBA 1300 696 604 .535

Alex Hannum 16 years (never more than 3 with a team) / 2x Coach of Year (one ABA) / 3 championships (St. Louis Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, ABA Oakland Oaks)
Career TOT 1213 649 564 .535

Chuck Daly 14 years (8 with Detroit) / 2 championships (Detroit)
Career NBA 1075 638 437 .593

Hannum, Nelson, and to a lesser extent Daly and Ramsay, had success with multiple teams, Sloan and Holzman didn't have much success in their other stops. Hannum makes Larry Brown look like Jerry Sloan, never having stayed in one job longer than 3 years.

Anyone else that people feel strongly enough about to vote for as their choice for 6th greatest coach of all time?

it seems like i'm overrating all these coaches by 1, which means this is the proper ranking for chuck daly.

I think I'll tentatively hop on the Daly bandwagon unless someone can explain why Hannum moved around so much (other than the fact that he had a huge ego and his brutal practice habits burned out his players who would agitate for him to move on which is my less than perfectly knowledgeable guess)

Give me the "Chuck" (anyone watching this funny TV series?)
Who would win one-on-one in HORSE?

Bird: Nobody beats me in H-O-R-S-E. Besides, Magic cant shoot.

Magic: Larry, you'd have no chance against me one-on-one. I've got too many ways to beat you. Plus, as slow as I am, I'm still faster than you.

I need some clarification: Is the intention to have the 20 top head coaches of the NBA. or top 20 coaches. if it's the latter, you guys might wanna at some point consider guys like Tex Winter.

Chuck Daly is one of the greatest coaches of all time and a true American. It's a shame he was dropped out of your top-5. He's accomplished much more then Larry Brown did in his career. Larry Brown is more or less a Doug Collins-type. A guy who improves your team, but then he leaves at the last moment or the team is never able to get over the hump.

Chuck Daly's Pistons played like he did: Large and filled with life, energy. There's a reason Jordan had to first slay the Pistons if he even wanted to see an NBA title.

Chuck Daly. So far the voting is way too biased toward contemporary coaches. Do we really think that 4 of the 5 best coaches ever are all current/recent coaches?

I do. And they're only current because they have been around for 20 odd years. Look at the all time wins column, and it is littered with coaches who were still coaching until very recently.
