Strength and weight lifting are COMPLETELY different.

It's actually EXACTLY the same. It's just that some players are both strong and heavy and know how to use their weights.

I've actually seen Karl Malone not let Shaq get deep post position, and when Shaq tried backing him down, Malone put up the best show of strength against Shaq that I've sver seen. I remember in 04, even when Malone's legs were giving him trouble, he was still able to push Yao's tree-trunk legs, peak Duncan, and peak KG out of the paint. I've seen him man-handle David Robinson, too.

Older Dennis Rodman deserves a mention. I've seen him body up Shaq, Hakeem, and Karl Malone pretty well. He had a tremendously strong base.

I'd say Shaq, Wilt, and Karl Malone are the strongest players in history.

It's difficult to really judge, but Shaq may be the strongest.

However, if a prime Shaq and a prime Artis Gilmore played against each other, Shaq probably wouldn't have been moving him around like he has everybody else.

And I'm certain there is one player that Shaq would have not pushed around: Wes Unseld. Considering that Unseld was around 6'8, he may have been the strongest ever, pound for pound

I gotta give a mention to Kwame Brown. The dude was the ONLY player I've EVER EVER seen not get pushed around by Shaq.

I remember one time Shaq was trying to back Kwame down and he actually got stuck and had to throw up a hookshot. My jaws dropped.

He might have been a Malcontent but while Danny Fortson played on the Sonics I saw him keep Shaq from getting deep post position. He played Shaq as well as anyone that year.

However I'd say Shaq is the most powerful player the game has seen.

His combination of size, strength and speed adds up to four rings.

Good point on Fortson. You're correct there. To answer the guy earlier, weight lifting muscle is not the same as "strength". For example, if someone could bench press 400lbs but couldn't do a pushup, and his friend couldn't bench press 225 but could do 100 pushups and is the same size, who is stronger? There are different kinds of strength. The strength we're talking about here is functional basketball strength. Not "how much weight can you push". While in LA, Shaq was the strongest player the NBA probably has ever seen. He could overpower anyone, and nobody could overpower him. And Wilt, no matter how much he could bench press, wouldn't be able to keep Shaq off the block. His bench pressing ability wouldn't help him, unless Shaq was laying flat on top of him!

Good luck finding a guy that can bench 400 and not do a pushup

Barkley.

Here he gets the better of Shaq.

I don't think pound for pound, no one in the world was stronger than Barkley in his prime. Imagine if he trained to become a strongman or bodybuilder. Damn.
