Gasol is a better rebounder & passer, while McHale has more post moves & is a better defender. Give me McHale.

Yep, that sweet up and under oh so awkward but efficient shot of McHale's. He had a good working relationship with Bird, Parish, Joshnson, Ainge. I'm not sure Pau has that with Kobe, yet.

I've seen a couple of the C's games from back in the day and I remember Mchale was the guy on Magic most of the time is that right?

No, DJ was. Mchale was usually on Worthy, meanwhile Bird was under the basket fighting for rebounds.

McHale was on Magic because Magic had already broken down DJ a few secs before.

I cant think of anything Gasol does better than McHale but he does remind me of McHale alot. I will say that Mc Hale wouldnt be as effective in the triangle because McHale wasnt a passer but a finisher.

McHale trying to cover for Fisher would be like Odom trying to cover for him. You have to switch a lot, and he'd still get burned.

Mchale was quicker than Gasol and theres a reason he has 3 all nba first team D and 3 all nba second team D and Gasol has nothing

on defense theres no contest

That's because he didn't have to go up against Duncan and KG. You say, well, he'd still get 2nd Team, no, he still has to contend against guys like Bowen, Artest, Battier, Lebron etc. The forward position is much stronger defensively today than in his era.

McHale were Gasol were both comparable offensively, both in terms of scoring and passing (well really, Gasol is the superior passer but it's not enough to make a large difference). Rebounding is generally a wash career-wise (maybe not peak though, Gasol looks like a new man this year). Overall, it's the defense that separates them and McHale was just a flat-out better defender. It's not a ridiculously large gap or anything but it's there. McHale was also the more aggressive, more explosive scorer generally, that has to be mentioned even though Gasol is clearly a 20 ppg threat every night.

I agree with Mean Streets and Sedale about their analysis of these two players. I would prefer Gasol for his passing skills and better rebounding but I understand why some would prefer McHale for his post play and defense.
