This is great news. Hawks would have not gotten equal value for Collins. The only problem with Collins last year was injury.

Hopefully Johnson and Kong can give big minutes this year and give Cap and Collins some load management.

As long as Cap, Collins, Bogs, and Hunter can give the Hawks +70 games next season, everything should be fine.

Anybody on Wizards roster we'd have interest in?

I like Kyle Kuzma, Rui, Deni Avdija, Corey Kispert and this year's #10 pick Johnny Davis.

Kuzma, Kispert and a protected 1st round pick gets Collins, IMO.

Huh? We want to move JC? When did this happen? :-?

No, I think the new Stockton to Malone/GP to Kemp stick together a while.

Is John Collins finger still jacked up? According to some reports it's swollen still. He seemed to be hiding it interviews today by clinching his fist and holding his hand with his left hand.

No. There’s no way to make it work without including that terrible Duncan Robinson contract. No way the Hawks even consider any package Miami tries.

Nope, not for a second. Looks like regurgitated old news.
The Atlanta Hawks aggressively shopped John Collins this offseason and he was a linked to a number of teams including the Sacramento Kings and Portland Trail Blazers.

The Miami Heat, who have a need at power forward, may have also explored a trade for Collins. The Heat lost PJ Tucker in free agency to the Philadelphia 76ers.

"There has been some Miami, John Collins chatter," said Zach Lowe. "It's old. It might be months old. I don't think it was ever really serious at al. They might revisit that."

The Heat have appeared to be more focused on their attempts to trade for Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell this offseason.

Collins re-signed with the Hawks last offseason on a five-year, $125 million contract in restricted free agency.

Riley trying to drum up interest un Duncan Robinson for an unprotected 1st is comical.
We would have just kept Huerter who is younger and cheaper.

Miami fans this makes sense, smh
Heat have pieces that would help the Hawks. Their projected starting lineup is solid but they have no depth.

PG: Young
SG: Murray
SF: Bogdanovic
PF: Hunter
Ce: Capela

No depth

My response to them

Hawks fan here:
This starting lineup is NOT solid for the Hawks. This lineup lacks size and will get killed on the boards. Hunter has struggled at PF and Bogi will get killed on defense at SF. Bogi is the 6th man for the Hawks and his minutes after knee surgery will have to be managed, he definitely won't hold up as a starting SF.
Additionally, Hawks just traded a cheaper younger version of Duncan Robinson in Kevin Huerter, so taking Robinson in any trade is counterproductive while also reducing the teams size up front.
Trading for Herro is also problematic since he'll be a 6th man behind Murray seeking a max contract. Hawks are also looking to resign Hunter.
I don't see a trade between these two teams as likely anymore - that ship sailed with the draft.

If Brooklyn execs are fans of J Collins, might he be enough to attain Ben Simmons in trade with the Nets?

Code: Select all

Multiple members of Brooklyn’s front office have been admirers of Atlanta’s John Collins from afar for years, league sources told HoopsHype. However, Collins wasn’t enough to be the headline player in a trade package with the Hawks for Durant.

Nope.
Let me know when Ben actually plays real basketball again.

It's that time of year again - This author suggests trading John Collins for K Looney, J Wiseman and J Kuminga.

Thoughts?

It’s Time For The Hawks To Trade John Collins So He Can Grow Elsewhere

Image

When the Atlanta Hawks re-signed John Collins to a five-year contract worth $125 million, they must have had a plan in regards to his future development. As the calendar pages have turned, however, the Hawks proved that they indeed did not have a plan with Collins. Or, if nothing else, their plans changed.

Collins, despite averaging over 21 points and 10 rebounds per game in the 2019-2020 season, has been reduced to that of a bit player, scoring only 12.4 points per game, and sporting a career-low shot attempt rate on a per-minute scale. Needless to say, the offseason acquisition of Dejounte Murray plays a part, as the Hawks backcourt of him and Trae Young are taking over 42 shots per game, and dominating the basketball. You'd think having two elite playmakers would unlock Collins to the point where he could showcase his offensive skills, but that has not happened.

Instead, the Hawks have pivoted towards De'Andre Hunter as their third option. That in itself isn't a bad thing, as Hunter is a fine player who offers more on-ball versatility than Collins, and frankly fits the mold of a new-age power forward more. Yet, the evolution of Hunter, and the usage held by Young and Murray, has left Collins out in the cold long enough. Since the aforementioned 2019-2020 season, Collins has seen his own involvement lessen every single season.

So, who could use a forward, who not only displays outstanding offensive efficiency (Career TS of 63.1%), but also a reliable three-point shot, and quality rebounding?

Enter the Golden State Warriors. In short, they need a talent injection. And soon.

Collins, who's earning $23.5 million this season, is more financially viable as a solution than for example former Warrior Kevin Durant and his $44.1 million, who has also been rumored as a trade candidate since asking out of Brooklyn over the summer.

Matching salary would be fairly straightforward, as Wiseman, Kuminga, and Kevon Looney amounts to $22.3 million. While this adds to Golden State's luxury tax bill, a Collins acquisition would dramatically improve their chances of repeating as champions this season.

The challenge for the Hawks is whether or not they would even be interested in adding several long-term projects to their roster, when they just acquired Murray over the summer.

Of course, a third team could be added to the trade as to re-route Wiseman and Kuminga to a team more inclined to focus on the long-term.
