:D

This should be our replacement for our starting center if he is traded away or for our current #3 center when he walks away.
Big moves are being expected from the front office of the Hawks. Who stays? Who don't? To me, this player fits the description
of what Atlanta needs at center. With OO staying, this would make a great 1-2 punch!

I had Williams as a top 10 pick since January. I don't know why people think he will go out of the lottery. That is why I have Walker Kessler as a target for the Hawks. But I hope I'm wrong and Williams falls like Collins did years ago.

Pro Comparisons for 2022 NBA Draftees

Mark Williams (Duke, C, Sophomore)

Image

NBA comparison: Clint Capela

Mark Williams figures to have the same role and type of impact as Clint Capela.

Williams will be similarly valued for his aggressiveness and toughness in rim protection and catch radius for easy baskets. He led the nation in dunks, shot 76.1 percent around the basket and averaged 2.8 blocks in just 23.6 minutes.

Like Capela, the negative with Williams is that certain matchups may call for his team to go small, and neither provides any versatility. They are rim runners, finishers and rim protectors, though Williams has the edge in post play and touch.

Mark Williams | 7-0 sophomore | C | Duke

In a word, thwack! Williams’ 7-7 wingspan makes him the top rim-protection prospect in this draft; Auburn’s Walker Kessler blocked more shots but also got cooked a lot more often, whereas Williams never got out over his skis hunting blocks and forced opponents to play over the top of him.

Those who dared to challenge him at the summit suffered unfortunate outcomes.

Of course, the big question with Williams is what can he do on the offensive end. His 72.7 percent mark from the line offers some optimism that he can make 15-footers consistently, but he rarely posted up and wasn’t a big part of elbow or high post actions.

The biggest reason to be down on Williams, again, is just his position. Even if you feel pretty good about him carving out a 10-year career as a backup center, that’s not enough value to take him in the top 20. His shot blocking, physical tools and short-range shooting touch offer realistic upside as a starter, however, and that would be the selling point for sliding him into my top 20 here.

Dude looks like a man among boys in the minor leagues.

Hollinger’s All-Change of Scenery Team

Mark Williams, C, Hornets

Do you remember when the Hornets took Mark Williams in the lottery and we thought he might be their starting center? Do the Hornets? Banished to the end of the bench by the emergence of Nick Richards and the continued employment of Mason Plumlee, Williams has played only 13 minutes this season.

Charlotte banished him to the G League instead, where he played four games and absolutely murdered everybody, averaging 23 points and 15 rebounds and ranking second in the G League in PER.

A change of scenery in this case appears unlikely, given that the Hornets just drafted him. More likely is a change of scenery around him, actually. With Charlotte mired at 4-14, the question is when they might make an early pivot to tanking in the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes. If so, trading a veteran like Plumlee and opening playing time for Williams would seem to be the right move.

Either way, free Mark Williams! He can’t prove anything else by dunking on people in Greensboro. He needs NBA minutes now.

:noway:

Well, gee whiz! Here is a player we need and we can't get. Yet he's not
getting any time in the NBA.

I did like both Williams and Kessler. I had Williams only slightly above Kessler due to his physical gifts, but I had Kessler better in hustle and fearlessness. Any nobody should be crying about Williams, he didn't fall to the Hawks in the first place. Kessler is the guy that the Hawks had the opportunity to draft if they wanted him.
