Knicks fire Head Coach Mike Woodson

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Mon Apr 21, 2014 3:21 pm

Mike Woodson has been fired as the New York Knicks' head coach, the team announced Monday morning. New Knicks president Phil Jackson announced in a release that the entire coaching staff was relieved of their duties:

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Woodson and his entire staff," Jackson said. "The coaches and players on this team had an extremely difficult 2013-14 season, and blame should not be put on one individual. But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond.

Woodson coached the Knicks for the past two seasons after taking over on an interim basis in 2011 following Mike D'Antoni's resignation. Woodson guided the Knicks to a 54-win regular season and a division title in 2012-13.

The Knicks also won a playoff series for the first time in 13 seasons under Woodson's stewardship.

Seems like Woodson would be a good fit for one of two places:

1. Indiana University
2. Detroit Pistons

He's an IU grad and won a title with Detroit as an assistant. He may not be an elite HC, but he's proven capable of mentoring a young, rebuilding squad. And he's been pretty solid in the regular season.

Best of luck to him. He's a solid, if umderhwleming coach. And I think he'd be great in college. It really says something that no matter how bad things got in ATL or NYK , he maintained the respect/support of his players. he just needs a talented assistant who's good at game management and Xs & Os.

Prior to Dumars being fired, I believe Josh Smith was being shopped, so I expect that to continue, even if Mike Woodson ended up being the head coach. I would really like to see Woodson coach College ball and give the NBA a break.

This tweet doesn't require a new thread. But it is interesting to hear (9 years later) Woodson call it being let out of his contract vs a dismissal.

Glad to hear Woody is doing well.
