13th and 22nd plus (What?)

Post#1 » by myrak433 » Wed May 28, 2025 12:22 pm

Should the Hawks go all in? What would it take to get another bonified Star player to pair with Trae Young? I think players that could be had include
1. Lauri Markkanen
2.Kevin Duran
3. Zion Williams
4. Giannis
5. Sabonis

No. Don't have the money or assets to build a winner that way

Giannis is the ideal target, but is likely too expensive. (I also doubt he wants to come here.)

Durant is a perfect fit, but is likely too expensive. (I also doubt he wants to come here.)

Markkanen is an ideal addition -- if the cost is reasonable.

Sabonis is intriguing and would be affordable.
  • He provides front court depth at both spots.
  • He provides additional halfcourt playmaking.
  • He's a really productive rebounder.
But, is he willing to be the sixth man to start the season?

Zion is a complete gamble.

I agree with most of this post. Not sure why you think Sabonis would be the sixth man. He clearly would be (to me) the 2nd option, if not the 2nd most definitely the 3rd.

Sabonis would be the second option from day one if used properly. The Kings are wasting his time. He would be a consistent all-star if he shot more than 12 attempts per game.

It becomes a matter of cost and fit.

Sabonis is a better player than Okongwu, but the defense at the Center position becomes an issue with Domantas/Jalen/Risacher front court.

Sabonis is a better player than Jalen, but are we willing to bench JJ for Sabonis?

If we came out of a Sabonis trade with Trae, Dys, OO, JJ, and Risacher still here, then you bench OO with no questions asked.

Truth be told, I don't see OO as a starter unless you're pairing him with a super star 4 or 5. OO is probably best coming off the bench, and that's not a bad thing if he allows us to be versatile enough to go big with Dys at PG, Zacch at 2, JJ at the 3, OO at the 4, and Sabonis at 5; or bump JJ out for Trae, and slide Dys and Zacch back to their positions. Non-Sabonis minutes could see the current projected lineup of Trae, Dys, Zacch, JJ, OO.

He can still give us 30ish minutes a night of production functioning as a super sub.

None of the above is wrong.

I will say, teams haven't fared well featuring Sabonis without a strong defensive anchor...and those concerns go back years.

I think the underlined portion has more to do with those teams not having quality pieces around Sabonis. Particularly the Kings anyway. In Indy, the few years that they did experiment with Sabonis/Turner on the floor together, they were solid defensively. Maybe not a juggernaut, but it wasn't no where close to bad as Sacramento. Here, we have long, athletic defenders that can provide help on the weakside. This is why keeping OO, and bringing him off the bench would help a lot because it takes the pressure off of him to defend big 5's, but still allow him to be on the floor with someone that can.

C - Sabonis
PF - Jalen
SF - Zacch
SG - Dyson
PG - Trae

Does that feel like a title contending starting lineup?

Considering internal growth, I believe strongly that it is. It's definitely a top 4 seed in the EC. It's not the defensive juggernaut many think we need to have, but I don't think we have to be a top 5 defense to win with that lineup.
