How Dybantsa, Young and Davis have the Wizards thinking playoffs



The vibes around the Wizards were high last week with the entire roster in Las Vegas, including [Trae] Young and Anthony Davis, whom Washington traded for in separate deals at midseason. Players attended Dybantsa's highly anticipated debut and then attended Young's news conference announcing his new four-year, $212.8 million contract the next morning.

With Davis and Young -- along with recent first-round picks Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson and Will Riley -- the Wizards have entered the next phase of their reconstruction. With Dybantsa's arrival, the pressure is on to be competitive and make the playoffs for the first time since 2021.

The Wizards, who have not made it past the first round since 2017, have gone 50-196 over the past three seasons. They need the 19-year-old to be great.

Young and Davis have developed an especially chummy rapport in their limited time together since Washington traded for Young in January and Davis in February. The two moves accelerated the Wizards' reconstruction effort which had been in Phase 1 -- the deconstruction phase -- of a four-part plan. Asked if he has to get in Davis' ear about wanting to stay in Washington, Young said he has had conversations with him.

Dybantsa is looking forward to working out with Young and Davis and learning as much as he can from them.

"This team can be super special," Young said. "We can achieve whatever we want to, especially if we have everybody healthy.

"We can do so many things, man. ... I just can't wait to play."

the contract isn’t solely about paying Young.

It’s about investing in the development of everyone around him.

That doesn't make the contract cheap. Maybe not even logical on its face for a ball-dominant, undersized point guard.

He's also one of the rare players to average 25.9 points and 9.8 assists for his career. Oscar Robertson finished above those 25-and-9 thresholds. Nobody else has in the past 50 years.

Atlanta Hawks: Trae Young (January 2026)

Trae Young's exit from the Atlanta Hawks was an incredibly slow burn. Speculation about his future in Atlanta began no later than 2023, amid reported questions about the team's direction and his long-term fit.

To the Hawks' credit, there never seemed to be a clear suitor ready to fork over a Godfather package for Young. People mused about the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs for years. It never came across as anything more than a thought exercise among armchair general managers, though.

Still, while Atlanta held out hope for a larger trade return or a core headlined by Young that could win, his trade value appeared to deteriorate.

He missed extensive time in two of the past three seasons. He shot 34 percent or worse from distance in three of the last four years. And most notably, the appetite for building around small, highly paid ball-dominant guards evaporated.

Atlanta wound up waiting so long that it moved Young at the absolute nadir of his value...and while he was injured. The return it received—CJ McCollum's expiring deal and Corey Kispert—amounted to little more than a salary dump.

Whatever your prior thoughts on Young, the Hawks surely could have gotten more for him had they acted during the 2025 offseason, if not even sooner.

Hawks made the correct decison to move what was a heck of a toxic drug for the locker room and team. Deadweight all season at $46m and we needed to keep that on the books until the off-season?

Trae Young sends major warning to rest of NBA regarding Wizards

Trae Young is deeply motivated to let everybody know that he remains one of the NBA's best and prove that the Wizards are a legitimate team.

Trae Young cannot wait any longer to play the 2026-27 NBA season for him and the Washington Wizards to prove their doubters wrong.

“This is the most slept on I’ve been in my whole life,” Young said during a recent appearance on “The Pivot” podcast. “I know there’s a lot of recency bias when it comes to media. Imagine the Wizards are the No. 1 team in the East next year. What are people going to be saying?

“I haven’t played very much in a year and a half because of some injuries, the trade, things like that. But trust me, I’m just entering my prime.”
