I remember hearing that Houston wanted to trade picks with us and give us a sweetner. That would have been better if we wanted Shel that bad (which we shouldn't have).
Granted, the draft is always a crapshoot but there were quite a few players who were obviously going to be better than Shelden who weren't going to be picked before him. A lot of teams would have loved to get their hands on Roy, Foye, or Gay. There are quite a few guys that were taken out of the lottery that the "experts" and laymen like us thought would be better picks. How do you make that bad a pick.

Ok....make the argument for these top draft picks:
2004: Josh Childress over Luol Deng
2005: Marvin Williams over Chris Paul (after taking 2 swingmen the previous year in the 1st round)
2006: Shelden Williams over ANYBODY
Explain to all of us who are so "full of it" how you have 4 consecutive top 5 draft picks and not ONE of them has come close to making an all-star team.
And...make the argument for giving the Suns 2 1st rounders for no reason when we could have signed Joe Johnson outright.
And...make the argument for signing a career backup, injury prone Speedy Claxton to a huge contract.
And...make the argument for chasing after Kenyon Martin and Samuel Dalembert and offering them insane contracts.
While you're at it...make the argument for Lorenzen Wright's inclusion on our roster.
And finally...explain to me how Billy Knight is anywhere close to "average."

You can't ask those questions in the here and now. You have to ask them in the context of then.
BK was super-star hunting. He wasn't trying to build a team, he was placing his $ on finding the next SS.
Look at most of the teams that have won big. Most of them have been built around a SS and a bunch of role players. I don't like this philosophy , but it is very prevelent.
Also, look at the marketing and the $.
People pay the BIG Bucks to see the SS's. Good teams are OK, but SS's sell.
