Portland again, but different

Post#1 » by evildallas » Fri Jun 27, 2008 10:44 pm

Let me say this isn't my favorite trade idea. I want Mike Miller more, but this does hold possibilities for strengthening overall team depth and doesn't preclude the Miller deal.

HoopsWorld Article

The thought is Sergio Rodgriquez, Ike Diogu, and Martell Webster for Josh Childress in a S&T.

Childress is a high PER glue guy. He has the potential to be a Battier type on a good roster. With Aldridge, Roy, Bayless, and Oden he won't be needed as an offensive go to guy. Outlaw coming off the bench provides a big change of pace for him (like the article says they prefer Outlaw as the offensive 6th man). I don't know if Portland likes Childress, but he would give them a dirty work player at a reasonable price.

Our resulting roster:
Bibby/Law/Rodriguez
JJ/Mario
Marvin/Martell/Jeremy
Josh/Diogu
Horford/Zaza/Solomon

I still like the idea of shipping Marvin and Zaza for Mike Miller and signing Kwame Brown as a free agent and filling in the end of the bench with development prospects like Jamont Gordon and Josh Duncan.

Bibby/Law/Rodriguez
JJ/Mario
Miller/Martell/Jeremy
Josh/Diogu
Horford/Kwame/Solomon

Miller gives us shooting range and veteran experience upgrade to the starting lineup. Martell gives us a second unit offensive force while Diogu and Kwame should help our backup D and rebounding. Rodriguez is development PG still under rookie deal. He provides us with a 2nd option to replace Bibby at the PG next year or at least a complement to Law when he takes over. Diogu and Webster are in the last year of their rookie deals, but should be resignable as backups if they play well.

A little too much value for an MLE player IMO. I actually think Portland would get better because Chil>Webster and Sergio and Diougu are going to ride the bench. I just think that's a little too much to give up. Chil for Webster/Diogu is decent.

I like the Miller deal in terms of how much better our team could be at its best (in other words, he is a great fit for that spot) and I think it might be more realistic. I do like the Portland deal for us although I wonder whether they are willing to give up all 3 for Childress.

Doing Both would give us the most talented and deepest team possible.

I was just going by the article, the contract values, and likely resign value for Childress. We would probably have to include a 2nd round pick (or 2) to make it more fair and close it. Like the article points out that Ike or Channing and Sergio are probably out in a numbers game and Martell is likely to be dealt as part of the package for an upgrade. Childress has an excellent PER and would be more of a complimentary player to the rest of the lineup. Martell really just brings offense and are there enough shots to go around? If Martell isn't getting enough shots then he winds up being a negative on the floor.

I don't think any of the 3 are going to contribute nearly as much as Childress. My hope is that the sum total of the 3 gives us more depth and injury coverage and add up to a slightly greater contribution than Childress.

If I'm Portland, I would actually look elsewhere (Detroit for Prince, Clippers for Maggette), but the prices would be higher and the fit might not be as good (Maggette I mean). Sergio, Ike, Martell, and one more salary (Frye) for Maggette would work. Detroit will probably want a more important piece to part with Prince.

I see the logic on their side, if those three guys aren't going to play than the contributions of one good player will do more basketball-wise. The more I think about it though, the less I see Chil going there. That team is going to be built around a low post player in Oden. Assuming Childress has stopped shooting the jumpshot because he doesn't have the confidence to take it any more (instead of Woody telling him not to take it), he isn't going to be able to complement a center who is going to be almost exclusive to the low post. I don't think Portland would be willing to commit that much money to a guy who doesn't necessarilly fit.

I don't know COB, Chill might be the ideal guy to have around on a team of many potential stars. Look at what he does for us with his play off the bench. He is consistently making plays around the basket, knocks down occasional 3s from the corners, and plays scrappy defense. A player like that can be the glue that puts all this talent together for POR. I don't that the Hawks would get much in Martell, Sergio, and Ike, but it could be a nice upgrade for our beach.

My feeling is I'd rather have one solid player we can count on in Chill than a few questionable players. It would make more sense to try and sign another guy to provide solid talent for our bench. Whether that looks like getting a better starter that pushes Bibby or Marvin to the bench, we need to be thinking along those lines. This trade might make some sense, but I think it's more of a step backwards by bringing in young players who have yet to prove themselves.

My thought is they need someone for the starting lineup to do the little things and not need touches. I know Oden is not selfish, but they will force him to be assertive because the pressure it can put on the D. Roy, Aldridge, and Bayless (ultimately) are all known for the offensive contributions. Outlaw is the same coming off the bench. They need a guy at SF who can hit the wide open shot when asked and can impact the game without the ball. Childress shot is ugly, but surprisingly accurate. He doesn't take the outside shot much here although it went up with Bibby in the lineup. Part of that is how he was used on the floor and the other part was their wasn't much reason for his man to double off him. That wouldn't be the way in Portland. I still think that Tayshaun Prince (best fit if they can get him without giving up a major cog) or Shane Battier are better fits for Portland, but outside of that Childress might be the best fit. Maggette, Nocioni, and Igoudala are all more offensively demanding. Same goes for the GSW free agents wings. The more I think about it Childress is the logical guy for Portland.

Whether we are better off with him or 3 bench players is another question. I think the answer is yes, but I realize it's a close call.

I wasn't trying to say that Chil was a bad player or that he wouldn't be useful in Portland. I was saying that the price Chil will demand on the market won't be commensurate with what he can offer Portland. Chil makes plays around the basket because that is where he is effective and that is where he is set up in the half court offense. Only 25% of his shots are jumpers... he isn't going to have that luxury in Portland where he will be playing with a behemoth like Oden.

Its not that he won't be more useful than the guys they lose but I just don't think they want what he offers at $6-7m a year for 5 years which is what he'll be asking for.

Keep in mind that teams built around an inside presence need 3pt. shooting and with Chil in the starting lineup they have a problem because Roy isn't a marksman from out there (he's decent) and Bayless is going into his rookie year.
