A retiring player only comes off the books if:
1. The league's doctors determine he has a career-threatening injury
-and-
2. He retires from the team he was with when he had the injury.
Trading him somewhere else and having him retire would help a team in terms of insurance (80% of his contract would be paid by the insurer), but it won't help that team's cap.
