Is our 2009 bench playing overseas?

Post#1 » by lunarblues » Wed Mar 25, 2009 5:49 pm

could the answer to the lack of depth on our bench be playing right now in Europe. we have a big, a wing, and a swingman in david andersen, josh childress, and cenk aknol playing right now in europe. two of them are in Euroleague getting some playoff expeirence.

what i'm asking is, if the free agent market isn't to our liking. do you think we finally bring these guys in?

Childress will likely be too expensive, but I think Andersen is a definite option.

I roughly projected his Euroleague stats to the NBA using Hollinger's analysis:

Using Hollinger's general model for projecting Euroleague stats to the NBA, Andersen's stats would resemble something like the following in the 20 minutes/game that Zaza gets:

8/5 with 0.48 eFG% and 83% FT shooting. His PER projects to around 14.6.

Compare that to Zaza's:

~7/6 with 0.49 eFG% and 71% FT shooting. His PER is 14.4.

In other words, Andersen would likely have about the same effect on the game as Zaza, just in different aspects. Andersen is older (29 in June) than Zaza (25?), but both players are basically finished products at this point. (I plugged Andersen's stats into basketball-ref for similar players and got, unsurprisingly, a list of players like Troy Murphy, Rasheed Wallace, Mehmet Okur, and Matt Bonner. You're not working with a big list of players when you look for bigs with perimeter range. Bonner is probably the closest talent-wise, although he's probably a better NBA 3pt. shooter and worse post scorer than David Andersen).

Honestly, no.

David Andersen can still make more in Europe than here. It requires paying him for his Euroleague production to get him to make the jump which is a risk most GMs won't take. All the Hawks are for Andersen is contract leverage.

I don't want Josh Childress back because of price, but mainly skill set. Childress's slow and inconsistent 3 make him a liability unless on the floor with at 3 other scoring options. That makes his asking price rather outrageous. I'd rather have then pay someone like Matt Barnes 2-3M a season than pay Childress the MLE. If Mario West would spend all summer working on a 3 point shot and free throws then he's a better option at the minimum than Childress. Mario wouldn't even need to be a great 3 point shooter, just develop a reasonable shot from a select spot on floor or two (corner and maybe wing).

Last I heard of Cenk, he wasn't ready to play against NBA competition and probably never would be.

David is basically not even worth mentioning. The amount of money he wants can be used to keep ZaZa who understands the system, has a good relationship with his teammates, and the fans adore him. There have been articles during the past that have note it take 5-7 million per year for David to even come over here. Another worthless pick. Luis Scola and Juan Carlos Navarro from the same draft didn't seem to mind coming over. It's ashame we didn't select Luis Scola, because we could use his hustle off the bench, and he's slowly making a name for himself. David's basically living like a God over there and it's more beneficial for him to stay.

Cenk Akyol's not talented enough to play at the NBA level. I wish he would prove me wrong, but I don't see it happening.

We need to focus on the bargain players like we did this past off season. Signing both Murray and Mo Evans was a steal for us. Looking back I remember us missing out on other bargain players like Jarvis Hayes, but Mo has done a nice job, and Flip has been amazing.

I'd like to see us try and bring in Jared Jordan from the D-league. I think he could be a nice backup PG in this league if he's in the right situation.

Jared Jordan? Talk like that is going to force me to start campaigning for Ben Woodside to be signed as an undrafted free agent out of North Dakota St.
