A RIVAL SCOUT ON THE HAWKS

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed Oct 21, 2009 2:08 am

I like their signings of Joe Smith and Jason Collins because they needed size off the bench. Those are moves a contender would make, and moves the Hawks didn't make in the past.... Everyone would agree that Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade are the top two shooting guards, and in my mind Joe Johnson is No. 3. You can't build a championship team around Joe, but if he's your No. 2 guy, you have a chance.... I'm not sure how much upside Al Horford has because he doesn't have that impressive athleticism. But he will be very good for a long time because he rebounds, he defends and he plays every play.... Josh Smith seems to be focused more on making the spectacular dunk than on the things he needs to do to help win. To his credit he has taken fewer threes the last couple of years, but so often the ball just stops when it gets to him and then bad things happen. Still, the guy is only 23. He could turn out to be a better version of Dennis Rodman and lead the league in rebounds and blocks.... It was a promising sign that Marvin Williams developed three-point range last year. He can be a 17-, 18-point scorer eventually, and he's a decent defender because he makes the effort.

I always get a kick from these. I actually agree with everything above. Honestly, with a more talented coach, I could see us actually contending with the big dogs.

I have two issues with that scouting report. Joe is not better than Roy and Josh has no chance to ever lead the league in rebounds.

I've already become wary of these "enemy lines" pieces from SI. Some of the things their "scouts" have spewed out in the past about us make no sense whatsoever.

And Joe the no. 3 SG in the league? Child, please!

Horford doesn't have impressive athleticism?? The guy is 6-10 and out rebounds 7 footers night in and night out. Also forget the fact that he occasionally rivals Josh for those oops at times. I dis agree with that assessment.

SI's previews are usually pretty bad. Just like how Ole Miss and Oregon were gonna be BCS busters and The saints are gonna finish 3rd in the south.

^Oregon has an easy schedule because they face both OSU and USC at home, which are their two biggest games remaining on their schedule. As far as the scouting report goes, Smith will never be as good as Rodman, Johnson would be a great #2 (Cleveland next year?) and he was spot on with Marvin Williams. But I'm not sure if the size will truly help unless those guys actually play 15 minutes per. Collins is a defensive sub every now and again and Smith will be lucky to see 20 minutes a game at the 5.

#1. Joe Johnson is NOT the third best 2 guard in the league. That's absurd.

#2. Josh Smith cannot hold Dennis Rodman's jock. That's even more absurd.

I pretty much agree with everything else.

Oh. And I really hope Al Horford has a clipping of this article above his pull-up bar, because if last night was any indication, he's gonna be a BEAST this season.

First off, I think he said Eastern Conference SG's didn't he? No I guess he didn't. I like JJ but he is not the #3 SG in the league. He is close though.
Second hell yeah Josh could lead the league in rebounds. But he has Horford on his team stealing a lot of them.
Put him on our team and he would. He is going to be your make or break player down there...It is that simple.
I want to see how he respond after a loss or two...I always see him as emotionally and mentally weak as a true leader of a contender. That is what makes Mike Bibby so key...
I am just not sure that he respects Mike Woodson or if Woodson is the guy to get it done down there or not.
You bring in a Jeff Van Gundy or bring back Mike Fratello for a third stint and it is a different story. I don't think they would listen to another guy I think would be good, Avery Johnson either.
But we'll see...
