Not the best player. The most important one.

Then we have no hope.
I would trade Josh Smith for a serviceable center in a heart beat.
He leads our team in steals and blocks.
But do you trust him to shut down the other team's best big man in crunch time?
Do you trust him to score one basket when the game is on the line?
Not a chance, dude.

Bynum, Aldridge, Thompson, Beasley, Al Harrington and Dwight have all hung 20+ games on us this season. If you notice, our second half strategy is usually to double any post player to limit their production and keep our bigs out of further foul trouble which usually takes away their bigs production but increases their guards production over that same period.
The reason, I'm sure, that Dirk was able to top all of their previous totals is because he plays on the perimeter which makes it harder for us to trap without giving up the middle which is the staple of Woody's defense so we just played him man on all night.

When we face a perimeter oriented 4 and an interior oriented 3, we should have Marvin guard them and have Josh guard the 3.
Anyways, part of our defensive woes are that Josh and Al are both undersized and playing out of position. The lack of true size and brute force is why I was so for signing Siler as a project (c'mon, it's not like Jason Collins has done sh*t for us) out of the hopes that he could turn into a Kendrick Perkins or something like that.

I'll just point out that John Bryant is averaging over 17 points and 14 rebounds a game in the NBADL. He had a great college career and has size. Some team is going to jump on this kid.

That's supposed to be Horford, not Smoove.

Re: its official, josh smith is the best player on the hawks
The question posted was would you trust Josh to stop a big one on one in crunch time.
Your response, what big has had good scoring games against us.
My response, Plenty but we double team or sag towards the paint no matter what so that our bigs don't have to go one on one in crunch time.
Your response, well Josh put up 20 points.
I think you missed the point.
Suffice to say Josh did come up big in the 4th quarter Saturday with a risky steal, up 3 with him having 5 fouls already. I don't see the need to trade him just for defensive purposes but I would love a 3 big rotation of Al, Smoove and someone like Brendan Haywood or Joe Pryz manning the paint allowing us to play straight up rather than sagging always. That would improve our defense, rebounding and versatility against teams but offense would still be an issue from the frontcourt.

Re: its official, josh smith is the best player on the hawks
I believe that with the addition of Crawford, Josh is now the most valuable player on the Hawks.
I'm not ready to call him the best. But I'm also not saying that he isn't. He will have to do it in the playoffs.
How does it go. You make your name during the season and you make your fame in the postseason.
I really came to this conclusion sitting at the Hawks-Knicks game. After Josh was thrown out the defense was severely compromised. The Hawks were able to step up the O without him but when they tried on D they didn't have it.
Josh is an underrated defender. And probably have the best year of any PF in the East. If not, he's in the conversation with Bosh and KG - THIS YEAR.
