Mario West to return

Post#1 » by nvc » Tue Jan 12, 2010 12:36 pm

From AJC:
The Hawks are expected to sign former team member Mario West Tuesday to a 10-day contract. West, who played for the Hawks for the past two seasons after making the team as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech, was cut in training camp this season. He has been playing for the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Developmental League
.

This seems like a great move. Too many opposition point guards have killed us. Bibby is not up to the defensive job on most other point guards. While we should really be giving teague more playing time, it seems like woody is not going to do that any time soon. Perhaps he will be more willing to give Mario some defensive minutes to help us out.

Besides, it will be great to have our funny little energetic bench guy back. missed him!

I would love this move ... bringing someone in who is familiar with the players and the organization, and can bring something to the table what the team lacks is always a good move. :)

How did mario play in the D-league?

I love Mario, but is he even going to see the court during his 10 day contract? Is there an injury I've not heard about? What seems more likely is that we have a 5 game home stand and he's being signed to check on his progress just in case he's needed later, but more immediately to be an extra guard in practice.

In the d-league, he's average 13.7 ppg, 4.1 apg, 2.9 rpg, 1.3 steals/g, 3.09 to/g while shooting 49% and 25% from 3 pt range. He's started 6 of the 11 games he's played.

I think he was just signed because the Hawks are below the minimum roster size and they had to sign someone. Why not sign a guy that has some friends on the team and ties to the community.

I wish that the Hawks had signed Anthony Tolliver. I'd love to see the Hawks have a bigman who can step outside.

I think we probably throw a suit on Randolph or Collins and dress Rio like we did last year for his little 15-20 second cameos at the end of quarters for defensive purposes.

No, but he will come in for Crawford at the end of quarters on the regular to play defense on opposing guards. That's how we used him the past two years, I'd imagine that won't change while he's here.

FANTASTIC move by a fantastic GM. The biggest problem this team has faced this year is a lack of effort and intensity some games. Which is exactly what Mario brings to this team. He is the type of guy that can really swing the momentum and energy of game in small bursts. I love this move. Sund is blowing me away so far.

I think this is a good move for the team. Rio bring that defensive spark and energy to not only the games, but also to practice where its effects might be greater. Kudos to Rick Sund.
