Should the Hawks go after L. Hughes?

Post#1 » by FCNATL85 » Sun Feb 28, 2010 8:25 pm

Now that it is clear that Z will go back to the Cavs, any sense of getting L.Hughes?
Won't play for another 3 weeks or so but could be an helpful 10' vet of the bench to releif JJ and JC or is this too much risk in term of team chemistry?

Bibby- JC - Teague
JJ - Hughes - Rio
Marv- Evans- JJ
Smoothe- Joe- Zaza
Al- Zaza- Collins- Morris

with the possibility to run JC- LH- JJ from 1-3. Could he add to the team without messing it up?

There is little to no chemistry for our bench so thats not an issue. I dont know about him and Craw though.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

I think the chemistry issue is a concern for team as a whole and not just the bench. I'm not a fan of Larry Hughes myself and don't believe that he brings a missing skill set to the team. I wouldn't really entertain the idea unless someone went down with an injury in the back court.

Skill sets I think we could use:
Rebounding off the bench
Defensive upgrade on fast PGs
Length at backup C
Ability to stretch the defense with a long distance shot from 4 or 5 spot.

Big Z could have conceivably filled 3 of those roles which makes it sad that he was a sure thing to go back to Cleveland. We could fill at least #1 (and maybe #3) from the D League if Woodson were willing to give a young rebounding specialist minutes. He won't though. Teague may have helped with #2 if he wasn't brought on so slowly. Rio could help with #2 as well if we could weather his offensive liability.

The truth is a signing only helps if it provides an upgrade over someone already in the rotation and Woodson will us them. Very few players available find that description.

I think that the term "chemistry issue" is sometimes thrown around as a euphemism for "we don't want to spend money on a gamble"

If the guy doesn't work, then he rots in your bench or gets waived again. If he works, then you add a piece to your team.

I miss Ted Turner...

It doesn't work like that. There's a reason why the Spurs dropped S-Jack immediately, even though they just won a championship and he helped them out a lot.

Stackhouse could have helped us. He wanted to be here. Instead he almost helped beat us yesterday.

He would have fit in great, imo. I'm not sure if it was a money issue or not, but he should have had a look.

I don't know what Hughes has in terms of baggage, but he would be a scorer and an instant offense on our bench.
