Josh Childress weighing his options, ponders return to NBA
Forward Josh Childress, who is playing for Greek pro team Olympiacos, remains a wild card for the Atlanta Hawks or another NBA team looking to add a 6-8 swingman with a knack for getting easy baskets.
Childress, who took the unusual route of playing in Europe after his fourth season with Atlanta in 2008, is averaging 14.4 points and 4.6 rebounds this season.
Childress can opt out of his contract with Olympiacos after this season but would be a restricted free agent with Atlanta. Or he can sign a qualifying offer from the Hawks for one year and become a free agent in 2011 or sign a longer deal with the Hawks if they offer one. Childress also can sign an offer sheet with another team, but Atlanta can match it. Or he can return to Greece for the final year of his contract.
He has until July 15 to let Olympiacos know his decision.
"It's going to come down to getting information quickly and weighing my options and making a quick decision," Childress said.
The 26-year-old said he wasn't leaning either way. But hypothetically, "I'd be leaning towards finishing my contract here because I signed a three-year deal," he said.
Said his agent, Jim Tanner, "Right now his focus is on doing everything he can for Olympiacos to make them as successful as possible."
Childress averaged 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in four seasons with Atlanta.
Atlanta has other personnel issues. Leading scorer Joe Johnson is a free agent this summer.

The lockout will loom large in his decision, I'm sure.
If he can get a multi-year deal in the NBA, he'll have a tough decision.

Man, he's really tearing it up overseas, huh?
If nothing else, this indicates he's a great bench addition but not much more.

My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Euro ball is really different from NBA ball.

Re: Josh Childress weighing his options
If the Hawks resign Joe then it is the perfect time for Josh to play chicken with the front office about his RFA status as they will be in luxury tax area. Even if they don't resign Joe it might be a good time for him to return to the NBA because Atlanta will be limited in how they deal with the situation. The lockout would make me think of staying abroad, but I'm pretty sure the same dollars aren't there for him to resign. Regardless of performance he will no longer provide the excitement of the big signing which was part of the justification on his salary. They need a newer and preferably bigger NBA star to continue that marketing campaign.

Yeah 14.4 is actually pretty good scoring numbers for the European game. I'm no expert but the game is clearly not 1-on-1 based like the NBA.
Unlike many I wish Chill all the best and hope he has success whether it be across the pond or in the NBA. He's a smart guy with a good attitude that did everything he could for us when he was here.

I just don't know how much money he can realistically expect to get in the NBA. Is he above a mid level guy? I don't see it. I think he should finish his contract and go from there. If there's a lockout play another year over seas and come back after that.

Re: Josh Childress weighing his options
He is better off just finishing out his contract in Greece. With or without Joe and considering the mle or it's equivalent in capspace is all we got, keeping him is not beyond the realm of possibility. No team will sign him for above that so we still hold the cards on matching any offer made to him. His choices still remains
a) hoping a team is not only interested but also has assets we would take back in a SnT
b) hope that management is unwilling to go into the tax.
c) stay in Greece

Re: Josh Childress weighing his options
He may not get this kind of an offer, but he worth as much as Marvin is.
Doesn't mean we would be better if the 2 switched places, but Marvin has not stepped up as expected.
Do we miss Chills? He would be another weapon off the bench and he fits the scheme here. He doesn't have plays run for him and is an energy type player.

I think Marvin is doing exactly what is asked of him. If Coach Woodson expanded his role on offense, I believe Marvin's numbers would greatly improve, and he would prove the doubters wrong. Marvin is one of our natural scorers and Woodson has failed to utilize him properly on offense.
I want nothing to do with Josh Childress and I hope we get some value for him.

Re: Josh Childress weighing his options
The kind of value that I see in Josh Childress is at best a player like Vujacic in a S&T. 5M. That would suffice for Chil to go back West... or a late 1st pick (POR) or early 2nd SAC or Golden State.
I would take any of those any day. I we trade for Vujacic i am not sure that we can afford him. All depend on Joe and cap...

Re: Josh Childress weighing his options
Today he just helped Olympiacos punch their ticket to the Final Four of the EuroLeague championships.
If OLY wins the EuroLeague and the Greek title somehow (haven't done either since '97 thanks mostly in part to Panathinaikos) then there's not much more he can really accomplish and would probably head back over to the states.
Otherwise, he's a very loyal guy and loves Greece. I expect him to finish out his deal.
