Hawks to interview Portland assistant

Post#1 » by LefthooK » Wed May 19, 2010 6:53 pm

The Atlanta Hawks will interview Trail Blazers assistant coach Dean Demopolous for their coaching vacancy, two NBA sources told SI.com.

Demopolous will join Dallas assistant Dwane Casey and ESPN analyst Avery Johnson as the primary candidates to replace Mike Woodson, who was fired after the Hawks were swept by the Magic in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

A source said the Hawks may still identify one or two other candidates, but they are not going to conduct a wide panel of interviews in the same fashion as the 76ers and New Orleans Hornets.

Hawks general manager Rick Sund appears to be going with familiarity; both Demopolous and Casey were on Nate McMillan's staff in Seattle when Sund was the Sonics' general manager. Casey was offered the job to replace Paul Westphal in 2000 but deferred to McMillan, who accepted the position and made Casey his associate head coach.

Demopolous is McMillan's lead assistant in Portland and, though little known, is well-regarded in NBA circles for his knowledge of the game.

It's still not clear if Sund is comfortable enough to hand over a team that needs direction and focus to an unproven commodity like Demopolous. Casey was head coach of the Timberwolves for a season and a half, while Johnson led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2006.

Casey has interviewed in New Orleans, while Johnson has interviewed in New Orleans and Philadelphia.

Another factor that may come into play is salary: The Hawks are a financially strapped team and reportedly do not want to play top dollar for a coach. Johnson is seeking at least $3 million, according to a source, while Casey and Demopolous may be willing to accept less at a time when many teams in the league are trying to get their costs in line.

I've read about this Demopolous guy and he seems like a good X's and O's coach - I'm just not sure about getting a Portland assistant. McMillan runs an isolation-heavy offense (like Woodson). I want to see some actual offensive sets and ball movement from the new coach.

I don't know if you can remember, but last season (or maybe the previous one), I posted some action from a ATL-POR game where we could see how POR killed us in the fourth quarter, and one thing that I am sure is that even if it started with ISO, there were picks coming followed by ball movement like we never saw in all the Woodson area.

I don't know if they run variety of these kind of system, but if it's not the only one they had, I am OK with Demopolous.

It also remind me that if Woodson had run such a system, he could turn Childress into a better 3pts shooter. Not that Childress did not have a good 3pts%, but that he could get more open shot like the POR 3pts guys had.

Definitely agree. A lot of guys will improve in a new system (Marvin, Teague, Childress).

I am kind of worried about Crawford. His game is tailor-made for an iso offense - he's so good at creating his own shot. I don't know if he'll be as effective coming off screens, moving w/o the ball, etc.

It seems like Sund is just picking a couple of guys he knows firsthand from his days in Seattle in Demo and Casey. I know he joined McMillan's Portland staff, but the AC we Blazer fans like the best is Monte Williams. However, he is ideal for a young team because his role was developing young players.

Demo has taken the helm a few times for Portland and I can't say I've been that impressed, but that maybe because he was forced to follow McMillan's game plan. Nate has a very basic ISO offence by the way so you might not see any changes if Demo becomes your coach.
