Tyson Chandler leaning towards opting out

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Jun 11, 2010 6:38 pm

Tyson Chandler a Free Agent in 2010?

It looks like I may need to add another name to my Top Free Agent List this summer.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that Bobcats big man Tyson Chandler is seriously considering exercising an early termination option on his contract this summer. If Chandler terminates his contract early, he'll forfeit the remaining $12.6 million he's due from the Bobcats and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

MJ is probably going to be thrilled if Tyson does opt out.

At first, with his recent injuries, it would look stupid to not keep a 12.6M year, but he's only 27 and could get benefits from the all these teams with cap room, maybe not for that kind of salary, but a long term lower salary.

There is also a possibility he's doing it to stay with CHA, because with a new long term contract but lower salary, he can help CHA to keep Felton without paying too much tax.
Without Chandler, they are at 48M (without Thomas too) so at least 20M under the tax threshold.
If Chandler starts at 7.5M, they can still use 7.5M for Felton and 5M for Thomas, and wouldn't pay any tax.

Is he really going to opt out of his huge ass contract? What an idiot.

If he does, toss him a 2 year MLE.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
