Coach Woodson made him think he has no purpose on offense so why should he feel any different? I think Coach Woodson got in his head and it caused Marvin to not work on his game as much during the off-season.

I had never really considered that Woodson might have ruined Marvin, but it makes sense. Larry Brown impacted Darko negatively as a rookie (in that case it was trying to force a different position and playing style on him) and he was Woodson's mentor. Coaches often have a negative impact at the pro level if the player doesn't have a strong enough personality to overcome bad advice. Another example is that Paul Silas told Carlos Boozer that he'd never be more than an energy/rebound guy. That contributed to Boozer's leaving Cleveland (along with a large difference in cash) so he'd get a chance to be more.

Clearly coaches have a huge effects on individual players. It's like work; if you don't like your boss, you're not going to enjoy or really give it your all in your work, even if they're paying you tons of money.
