I think the Hawks should start making moves now to clear up cap space for Dwight, or Deron, or Paul, but if management doesn't want to commit to actually putting a championship team together with Joe and Horford, and try to do it on a budget, then just like the Evans for Sessions trade idea, why not go the opposite direction and trade cap for marginal talent like:
Bibby for Haywood
or
Bibby for Andray Blatche
Brendan Haywood

Re: Brendan Haywood
Andray Blatche may be kind of a headcase but he has WAY more value than Bibby.

Blatche would provide bench scoring. The rumor mill already shot down any interest in Haywood because of that contract.

In 2013:
Joe Johnson -- $19,752,646.
Josh Smith ----- $13,000,000.
Al Horford ----- $12,000,000.
Total ------------ $44,752,646.
If we got rid of every other player we have, we'd still not have enough. Add in that the new cap may be LOWER after the CBA is renegotiated and we have a tough road ahead.
I agree with your thought but we probably couldn't sign Howard outright. We'd have to reduce salary and then pull a SNT, using one of the big 3 above, to make it work.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Hawks can offer Dwight, or Deron, or Paul a Lebron type of deal.

Re: Brendan Haywood
LeBron willingly took less to play with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Dwight or Deron are not going to take less to play with a bunch of soft players who don't give a damn + Al Horford.

Bosh also took a deal similar to Lebron.
with the LA, NY, and CHI situation, only ATL and Dallas and BOS remain as the major media markets left who can make a decent offer to Dwight, Deron, and Paul (and both DAL and BOS are old and won't have that much left in the tank in 2013)

Re: Brendan Haywood
NY can make an offer in 2012/2013. They'll only have $41MM in salary that year, while we're at $45MM. Clippers will also have oodles of space.
And plus, ATL might be a 'major media market' but we can't even get any fan attendance. Why bother?

mentioning that the Clippers have an actual shot at signing top tier free agent show that you really don't know what you are talking about

I don't think fan attendance is a realistic concern of most of these athletes....but incompetent ownership is.
You also have to keep in mind that Harry proposed a Marvin+Zaza for LeBron sign and trade last summer on the grounds that LeBron woulnd't go to Miami,Chicago,or NY.

exactly.
and if Cleveland was smart, they would have taken a Marvin, Zaza, and Picks for Lebron. at least they would have gotten mulitple Picks for losing a top 5 player. Just look at the Jazz and Deron, at least the Jazz got something out of nothing.

Re: Brendan Haywood
Clippers are a very decent team now, and I would rather take them going into next year than our team.
Lulz at Cleveland taking Marvin/Zaza/picks for LeBron, I'd rather have the TPE and picks from Miami.

The player has to agree to a sign and trade and it was pretty obvious that LeBron made up his mind to go to Miami before July 1st in hindsight.
