Time to criticize Sund's draft history?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Thu Feb 24, 2011 2:57 am

Jeff Teague
Sergei Gladyr

Jordan Crawford
Pape Sy

Jordan Crawford has played his last game with us, so Sund must not feel too confident in the player he traded for on draft night, and it's not looking very promising for the rest of his selections. I'll give Pape Sy a pass since the kid is so raw.

It looks like we'll have to rely on our current core of player and for Sund to sign role players that can contribute. I have no confidence in Sund to draft a hidden gem during the first or second round. I wish Jordan Crawford the best, but I'll credit Washington, if he happens to end up becoming a successful player.

Teague was a reach on raw talent over talent at a position. Darren Collison, Eric Maynor, Toney Douglas, and Rodrique Beaubois all went later in the first round and play the same position, most with more college experience. Teague wasn't a PG in college and was changing position which adds to the prospects of failure. More on this pick later.

Sergei Gladyr kind of gets a pass because no one made a great impact after him in the draft.

As for Jordan Crawford, we traded down to get him and a good pick in addition which we sold. I'll have to wait and see if he missed the boat on Crawford's talent evaluation. I think he will blossom to be a solid player, but was never given a chance here to show it. That didn't surprise me as I thought he was a move in anticipation of replacing Jamal Crawford in the future. I don't blame Jordan for getting traded today. If anything I think it is the failure of Sund's first draft pick that forced it. If the replacement PG (Teague) had been further along then we probably wouldn't have needed to overpay for such a moderate upgrade at PG like we did today. Any of those other picks would likely be a solid rotation guy right now or show so much promise as to be untouchable. As such Bibby wouldn't have logged so many minutes and Jamal Crawford wouldn't have spent so many minutes as PG. In this scenario we likely could have focused on other needs in trade or even left Jordan Crawford to his planned low cost bench scorer role for 2011-2012 season.

Now if you really want to depress yourself evaluate the re-signings on 2009.

I still believe in Jeff Teague. Tonight he finally gets PT, and he's putting up a better performance than anyone not named Horford.

I don't have much confidence in Teague being the pg of the future(despite the fact that I was high on him in the draft)...but I don't think you can classify the pick as a failure yet. He has a PER of 13 and seems to play better when given extended minutes. They obviously missed on Collison and Blair(both starters)but Teague might be a quality backup one day which is OK for the 19th pick.

I think the bigger problem is the ASG. Their definition of a successful draft or coaching search is whatever saves the most money.

On the bright side he didn't sign any of his failed Seattle draft projects as free agents here.

Jordan was Sund's emergency plan if Joe left. Joe stayed...therefore no room for a 6'4" SG.

Perhaps he can play and be a contributer, but there is no room here in Atlanta.....any SG gun for hire will be on the bench and have to fight to get minutes around Joe and whatever PGs we go with.
Hindirch fits IMO better than Bibby...he gets 1+3mos chance to prove his worth.

Sund wasted a pick instead of going with a weakness on this roster. Truly, how many rookies are headed to the playoffs this year as a contributor? Landry Fields? That's about it.

Anyone else is playing a minor role as a rookie, so for the current needs to make a playoff run, Jordan wouldn't help us at all.

Next year's draft? Hard to say for now, but our history states we need to avoid the draft altogether.
But that is a void in my schedule....I like to bring in new faces. Until we get a staff that will grow our players, no sense is drafting.

Even though we've not drafted well, we can't avoid the draft. The draft is a must for now marquee franchises and we're not marquee. We need to do better at the draft. Making successfully use of the 2nd round to inexpensively develop a bench is a must. We ought to be looking at San Antonio as how to run a franchise. The money they spend scouting and on a D League team pays off in the final product. We should emulate that.

Having said all that, this year isn't a bad year to avoid the draft's first round. I suspect a lot of prospects will stay in school rather than risk being out in the cold during a lockout which will lessen the chance of an impact player (by that I mean someone playing in the rotation) where we will draft. We could probably fair as well in the 2nd round if we shop smart.
