Hawks Off-Season Plan Version 2.0

Post#1 » by pja123 » Fri Mar 25, 2011 5:18 pm

Step 1:
Fire Larry Drew

Step 2:
Hire Mike Brown

Trade No.1 (between Atlanta, Dallas, & Phoenix)
Hawks get:
Brendan Haywoode

Mavs get:
Robin Lopez
Josh Childress

Suns get:
Marvin Williams

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
We finally get a legit 7'footer on the roster in Haywoode. He's had a down year since winding up in Carlisle's dog house, but I think be could turn things around in a new city. The Hawks could definitely use his talents up front.

Trade No.2 (between Atlanta & Denver)
Hawks get:
Raymond Felton
Al Harrington
Timofey Mozgov

Nuggets get:
Kirk Hinrich
Zaza Pachulia
Pape Sy

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
Felton is not happy in Denver and has intimated that he will probably ask for a trade in the off-season. If we can land him, I think the Hawks should definitely do it. He's a legit PG signed to a very reasonable contract and would pair nicely with JJ in the backcourt.

Trade No.3 (between Atlanta & Indy)
Hawks get:
Danny Granger

Pacers get:
Josh Smith

WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
A perimeter combo of JJ and Granger would be sick-nasty. This deal would also allow them to move Horford down to the 4 spot. A trio of JJ, Granger, and Horford isn't Wade, Bron, and Bosh but it is still damn good.

FREE AGENCY:
Sign Tracy McGrady - 1 year/league minimum
why?
When healthy, he can still be a good contributor.

Re-sign Hilton Armstrong - 1 year/league minimum
why?
Armstrong provides more depth up front.

Re-sign Damien Wilkens - 1 year/league minimum
why?
Good backup 3.

Sign Marcus Thornton - 4 years/20 million
why?
Thornton is a quality 2G with good shooting abilities and athleticism. He'd be a good addition to the bench.

NEW HAWKS ROSTER:
PG-Raymond Felton/Jeff Teague
SG-Joe Johnson/Marcus Thornton
SF-Danny Granger/Tracy McGrady/Damien Wilkens
PF-Al Horford/Al Harrington
C-Brendan Haywoode/Timofey Mozgov/Hilton Armstrong

I would love for this to happen. Where do I sign?

A few problems though. Indiana has a plethora of power forwards, they do not need Josh Smith.

Mike Brown... really? That's Mike Woodson 2.0. Why not Jeff Van Gundy? He has got to come out of retirement sometime.

Marcus Thornton is a restricted free agent that averages more points (in his 15 games at sacremento) than any Hawks player including Joe. I Think he is going to get better than 4 years / 20 million out on the market.

I'm sure the Nuggets would love to get rid of Al Harrington's contract.

Overall great off-season for the Hawks.

Brenda Haywood is soft and immobile. Mosgov would be better as he is pretty agile and gifted in the post, he seems a good fit next to Horford.

Josh plays the open court better than anyone on this team. Which is sad because I saw him throw a ball off the backboard against my local team(Lakers). Indiana wins this trade imo especially if they let Smith play the 3 and he plays well with Collison. Hansbrough can space the floor and so can Hibbert. They are also very flexible for 2012/13 FA

Most definitely on step 1

Step 2 needs to be Bill Laimbeer or JVG

Indiana doesn't have a Josh Smith type PF though.

If we are going to trade Smith, Indiana is going to have to help orchestrate it with Granger or George going some where. I like us getting Ellis and talking to Houston about a Marvin & Zaza for Hill swap, which free's up plenty of money to throw a nice contract at Marc Gasol(8 mill+) and maybe get Mayo in the S&T with Marc for some future picks.

Sign Josh McRoberts,T Mac, & decent SF

Resign: Wilkins and Armstrong

Draft:Keith Benson

We could still be under the cap if we sign correctly. I really think that could be a championship team with an upgraded bench with Kirk,Mayo,Teague Wilkins, Hill and McRoberts all rotating in for Ellis, Joe, T Mac, Horford, Gasol. Possibly 51 Mill tied into a very solid starting line-up and the bench getting the rest within the tax. It will be pushing it bcuz of Hinrich, but owners say they will hit the tax for a legit team.

"Indiana has a plethora of power forwards, they do not need Josh Smith."

They have Hansbrough, McRoberts, and Jones (who is a free agent this summer). I wouldn't call that a plethora and even if it was, it's not worthwhile to keep around next season for the Pacers. I definitely think they'll look to upgrade the 4 spot and Smoove would provide that. He and Hibbert would make a damn good frontcourt since they both have shot blocking skills. They could then start George at the 3 and they could use their cap space to get a starting 2 and fill their bench with good role players.

"Marcus Thornton is a restricted free agent that averages more points (in his 15 games at sacremento) than any Hawks player including Joe. I Think he is going to get better than 4 years / 20 million out on the market."

That's a legit point and teams like Chicago, Charlotte, and Dallas will probably be looking at Thornton as a potential starter. If the Hawks miss out on Thronton, they could also pursue JR Smith or maybe Marco Bellenelli.

JSmith(12.4), Pachulia (4.8) and MWilliams(7.5) to the Clippers for Kaman (12.2), Gomes(4.0) and Aminu(2.8). You save 15 million over the next 3 years by paying Gomes instead of Williams. You move Horford to his natural position, you get a 15/10/2 center and you get a 20 year old version of Josh Smith.

I rather see Josh in the local clippers uni, assuming he loses the weight.

Not bad at all. Loved step 1. Not sure about step 2, but as long as the coach isn't from the same old group then it would be worth it.

Trade 1 - Sure, just get rid of Marvin. If Haywood plays like he's capable of it's great.
Trade 2 - Sure, I like that you take on a bad deal (Harrington) to get the players you want (Felton, Mozgov)
Trade 3 - I don't know if they will do it, but I don't have a problem with trading Josh anymore. Need to shake up the power structure and Joe's contract feels immovable.

Signings - I'm not sure about McGrady. He still has talent, but I'm not sure he's completely accepting of his new role. The other signings I think are fine although I'm not sure Thornton would accept the deal and the role on the team. He might choose elsewhere without out such big money ahead of him in the rotation.

All in all I like the final product. I think it is an improvement over the status quo. Of course, we're in freefall right now and I'm not sure what wouldn't look better to me.

I personally want to see two major changes happen this off-season, one involves a player, and the other one involves our coach. At this point I would be all for Mike Brown coaching this team.

Trade 1: Dallas has no need for Josh Childress and his long-term contract. The return is simply not great enough for them to move a big man like Brendan Haywood who they should be able to acquire a better return for. Mark Cuban will most likely make his usual mistake this off-season and sign Caron Butler long-term.

Trade 2: Denver should be able to acquire a better return for any trade that involves Felton (solo or not).

Trade 3: I have my doubts that Indiana would do it, or value Josh Smith highly enough.

Sign Marcus Thornton - 4 years/20 million? I love this! Marcus Thornton was high on my draft board, I wanted us to consider him, and he was one of two players I wanted Dallas to draft. So, with that being said, I fully support pursing Thornton.

Me and evildallas have been in this camp over the years...but I'd probably consider not watching the Hawks if they hired Larry Brown as coach(let alone name him GM as well, lmao).

L. Drew must go no matter what. Then, we should try to trade J. Smith. I love the idea of sending him + anybody not named Horford to the Warriors for S. Curry and Biedrins. Marvin is the next one to go. Without a pick, he's hard to move though. I really think we're stuck with JJ. I can't believe any team not named Magic would trade for him, and even in that case, we'd have to take Arenas back. J. Crawford isn't a keeper imo. One-dimensional and predictable. Our bench is terrible, why in the world have the Hawks kept Zaza for all these years ???????????? In other words, the only untouchable to me is Al. This team style/structure must be changed. BREAK THE CORE.
GO HAWKS.

Al is a pinch shooter. Trade Smith and Hawks will regret it unless they get a Chris Paul back.
