Raptors Fan here, How was Mike Woodson?

Post#1 » by J Dilla » Thu Jun 2, 2011 3:57 am

Raptors are on a major rebuild, and today they fired their Head Coach Jay Triano who wasn't holding his players accountable and had the team play with one of the worst defenses in the league for the past 2 years.

Mike Woodson becomes an interesting candidate since he's been through a rebuilding stage, and was a big part of the Pistons' defense back when he was an assistant coach with them.

So tell me, is he a good coach? What are his postives and negatives. I do remember he had a lot of problems with Josh Smith, but those went away later.

Thanks

He and Larry Drew played point guard in the NBA so they are quite naturally point guard coaches.
Gr8 talent evaluator.
see Chris Paul, Acie Law, Marvin Williams, Josh Childress, Shelden Williams, Salim Stoudamire, Mike Bibby and Jeff Teague fiasco.

he would be better than Jay Triano.

your team right now is better than the team he took over when he first became the hawks coach.
If you guys can get Billy Knight as well you could become the Toronto Hawks! LOL!!!
but just don't let Billy draft a pg.

How about his offensive and defensive playbook?

Our PG situation wasn't really that good either when minutes were handed to Calderon for playing like ****, while Bayless was rotting on the bench.

He's an okay coach. He stresses defense, his players play hard for him. He's more of a regular season coach than a playoff coach. He's not particularly creative offensively and he rarely makes in-game adjustments. But he'll get you to the playoffs. His teams will hustle.

He needs a strong GM to encourage him to utilize all his players as he's terrible at player development, particularly on the offensive end.

His regular season record improved every single season he was here. He took us from a 13 win team to a 50 win team in 5 years. But he makes excuses and is kinda defensive. Doesn't take responsibility when his team doesn't perform well. He's a good man to get your team off the ground, and then dump once you're ready to try for the next level.

Defensively, Woodson isn't a horrible coach.
Offensively, he is horrible. He loves to use isolation since it seems it the least amount of work he actually has to do concerning plays. It is apparent from seeing his offensive playbook that he is truly a defensive coach.

all he did on offense was run iso's for his guards... thinking the raps roster isnt the greatest fit for him.

He will make Derozan into the next Joe Johnson but Bargs and the like better get used to camping in the corner while they watch him isolate. He was always billed as a defensive coach yet he could never actually field a better than average defensive team for the Hawks despite his constant emphasis on it. Now his excuse was personnel but when you see teams like Philly and Miami have top defenses despite having small/slow frontlines and their best defenders being a wing then it tells me that he either really just failed to actually get his young roster to buy in and give effort (which would be a problem) or he just didn't have a competent scheme to begin with (also a problem).

Didn't strike me as much of a developer or motivator either, he had a role for you and if you could fulfill it then cool beans if not then oh well. That aspect ties into his worst attribute as a coach, he is very inflexible, like very very very inflexible. Be it roster changes, gameplan changes or in game changes he would never deter from his original strategy and his teams became very predictable due to this.

Now sure on most nights the Hawks could still out talent or downright out athlete plenty of teams during the regular season despite them knowing exactly what it was that they were going to do but that ties into my other complaint about Woody, he took a lot of credit for the presumably natural maturation and growth, both physically and skill wise, of the team. That is no more evident than his "record" which you can never fail to hear during a nationally televised game. Sure Woody had some play in the team improvement but I'd also say that the amount of very young talent that he both started off with and was given over the years had a lot to do with that as well.

All in all I say that the Raptor roster presents a good situation for him because there are a lot of analogs to his past Hawks team so he should feel comfortable settling into their bench should they ever decide to pick him up.
