Top 5 pick
Do you think Josh + 2nd rounder this year + future 1st (not next year) + Kirk and maybe taking on a bad contract could net us a top 5 pick this year? I know it's a weak draft class but I love the Centers in it, and we'll have a chance at Kanter. What's your feedback

Why would we even want a top 5 pick at expense for a 25 year old whose already good? This draft blows.

Yes it could. But it wouldn't be a good trade for your team

This trade is well-intentioned, in that it would be good to get a Center. Problem is, the return on the value of Smith is too poor.
Kanter won't be there at #5, Biyombo scares me, so that leaves Jonas Valanciunas. The entire question is whether he is worth it. He'll be hard to sign (huge buyout required), he's young (19) and he's raw. Add that he's not very strong and you have a real gamble. The guys who have to put on a lot of weight fail more often than not. Either they cannot add the weight or their bodies cannot handle the new weight (hello, Greg Oden).

My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

I see no reason to move Josh Smith for a top 5 pick, so I see your point, but most likely one of the top 5 picks from this draft will become an All-Star before Josh Smith, and have a greater chance of becoming a star player. We'll need to wait to see how the rookies turn out, but yes, the draft does blow for the most part.

Re: Top 5 pick
The draft really doesn't blow. I mean there really isn't a clear cut super star in it, but there are plenty fringe star type players that could go on to be star players. Then after them, you will find plenty of role players for a contenders that will stretch into the 2nd round.
I would say this is the best draft to find those quality role players. Heck, if we held onto our pick, we could have nab a great role player like Montiejunas or Klay Thompson.
It would be nice to S&T Crawford to Chicago for Asik, Brewer, and those 2 first they have. Maybe then use the picks on Chandler Parsons and one of Jeremy Tyler or Nikola Vucevic. I like both, but Vucevic is probably the better fit for C.
Would be nice to just swap Marvin for Cleveland's 2nd and maybe Gibson or another filler to take Tyler as a back up PF/C. In the end, could give us a decent starting center(Vucevic), another skilled, athletic shot blocker(Tyler), glue guys in Asik, Parsons, and Brewer, and more perimeter shooting with Gibson.
