AJC: Al Horford for Superman: Should the Hawks....

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:20 pm

Al Horford for Superman: Should the Hawks make that offer?

Dwight Howard has said he’ll opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Otis Smith, Orlando’s general manager, has said he won’t trade Howard and believes the NBA’s best center can be persuaded to re-up with the Magic. Other NBA clubs won’t sit around and wait. They’ll make offers for Howard.

Should the Hawks make an offer?

They could make a tantalizing one: Al Horford and Kirk Hinrich for Howard and power forward Ryan Anderson. That’s an All-NBA center (third team) with a Florida background who’s under contract through 2016 for a reasonable $12 million per season and a useful guard whose contract expires in 2012. The Magic could make something of that. http://blogs.ajc.com/mark-bradley-blog/ ... hat-offer/

Mark Bradley must need to win back some Atlanta fans and support in Atlanta.

Good grief.
Of course we'd jump at that.

And I love Al Horford, but - be serious.

If and only if Dwight agrees to an extension.

^Just the chance at dominating the NBA for the next 5-10 years is reason enough why we'd have to agree to a deal like this - even without the extension.

Then there is the chance of Dwight walking and being the laughing stock of the league for the next 10-15 years.

I'd do that trade in seconds even without an extension.

I would ask for a one year extension so that Dwight doesn't feel trapped and we have a chance to build a team around him with support players to convince him to resign later.

Ive left the most compelling arguments on RealGM about just this scenario. If I wasn't pokering I would like them.

Been there, done that. We survived.

When have we EVER had a chance to win it all?
Besides, if we can't keep a Georgia boy,
from Atlanta,
with his best friend,
in a team that fit him perfectly (Howard has always asked for bigs to help him: Smith is just what he wants and is a fantastic weakside shot-blocker; Teague is better than Nelson at the pick-and-rolls that Howard and Nelson excell at, and Joe Johnson would be the best long-range shooter Howard has ever played with) -
- if we can't keep Howard - with all those advantages - we'll have discovered we'll never have a championship team and we can all just go home.

It won't work like that.

That's like asking him to just sign with us for the vet minimum for one year so we can sign him outright during the following off-season. Dwight will want his money and he'd have a solid supporting cast around him depending on what it takes to acquire him.

Hawks fans have been thinking about this proposal for along time now. as religious as Dwight is, Dwight will have no hesitation signing an extension with Atlanta for a long time to be back home and with his family

Horford is not the best offer in the NBA, but it is in the top 3.

1. Cap
2. Westbrook
3. Horford

Noah and Lopez are not a guy you build around, Horford is a legit #2, Lopez is way too soft and Noah has way too many flaws. Bynum will only play 50 games next year and will be out of the league in 3 years, along with Odon
