Mr. Sloan!

Post#1 » by Ruhiel » Wed Mar 7, 2012 10:02 pm

* Don’t be surprised if Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan is back on the sideline next season.

Sloan, who resigned just over a year ago after a remarkable career with the Utah Jazz, piqued the interest of some NBA teams during the offseason, one being the Indiana Pacers who eventually rehired Frank Vogel.

But Sloan, who turns 70 on March 28, apparently has the coaching itch again and would seriously consider a return to coaching. Sloan is just one of three NBA coaches to ever have had 15 consecutive winning seasons. The others? Phil Jackson and Pat Riley.

Smoove enjoys wearing his headband so Jerry can take a hike.

Be still, my beating heart.

Dude, I would LOVE if Jerry Sloan became our head coach. He is (IMHO) one of the greatest NBA Head Coahes over the last 30 years. No other coach has consistently done more with less.

My concerns:
-Josh Smith would not be able to deal with a controlling HC and disciplinarian like Sloan.
-Our team, overall, is more style than substance when it comes to NBA talent. Not alot of fundamentals amongst our group.
-At most, this would be a temporaray fix as Sloan would probably retire again in 2-3 years.

But it would be an upgrade and he'd be the best HC we've had since Lenny Wilkens.
Serious roster changes would have to be made, though.

On a brighter note, Cenk Aykol would probably get alot of playing time. :P

Teague and Josh(though probably Horford) would love it as Jerry Sloan is the Shanahan Broncos of the NBA. He runs a system(which he pretty much got from Frank Layden) that makes pretty good PF's look GREAT and point guards look pretty good too(Stockton was amazing, Malone, and I will argue this with anyone, was a product of the machine who happened to be in great shape and never get injured). Jerry will get any PF close to 20-10 and any point guard close to 10 assist per game.

What he doesn't do is run Iso plays for shooting guards or use the SF position for anything but a shooting outlet. He probably would prefer Horford at the 4 because his midrange game is more in line with what he wants to do at the 4 and Horfords lack of post game would be a non issue.

Josh and Marvin become expendible in his system(if he moves Horford to the 4), and honestly if in return you get a solid Center and exceptional wing defender that can knock down the open 3, I would have no problem with that.

Sloan got Kirilenko to play pretty decently at SF.

To me, Sloan's big talent was in getting shooters open looks. What he'd do with Joe is what intrigues me.

Makes no sense for the roster unless you were to flashback 7 years. His status was based on the fact he was a folk hero in SLC whose old school training, practice, and even appearance regiments in addition to giving zero attention to young guys while expecting the world from vets was tolerated because the mormons get off on that clean cut order stuff. In a city like Atlanta.....with a roster of vets.....vets that didn't stand up for a notorious players' coach like Woody and voted in his softer assistant.... Yea, they'd be some major chaffing going on.

Really mostly Marvin and Al would be able to fit in because they can subjugate their egos the best but they aren't the most talented to be building around.

Josh would have no chance, he'd be made into Sloan's whipping boy just like how he constantly tried to make examples out of Kirilenko.

Teague would have no chance as Kirk would get all preference and Zaza is on the fence because he's chaffed in the past over playing time.

Unless we went into a super rebuild that included a top pick and a bus load of role player vets he just wouldn't be able to reach the roster before mutiny.

I'd love Sloan as the coach, well to me pretty much everyone's an upgrade over LD.
