Rick Sund asked to stay on as GM

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed Apr 18, 2012 10:11 am

From Mitch Lawrence with the NY Daily News:

- Atlanta’s owners want Rick Sund to stay on as GM and offered him a deal to stay, but he’s told them he’ll have a better idea what he wants to do after the season. He wants to take some time to decide if he intends to continue running the Hawks on a day-to-day basis, or if he wants to slow down and become a consultant for Atlanta or for another franchise.

I'm pretty conflicted by this. He's done an adequate job, all things considered. But it's just more of the status quo for a organizaion that desperately needs a makeover.

It's noteworthy that Sund didn't immediately accept the extension. Makes me think he's biding time until he can get as far away from our dysfunctional ownership as possible.

Also of note: MC at AJC reports that
Hawks co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. has said any contract talks for Sund would happen after the season.

Hilarious that even a mediocre GM like Sund gives pause before accepting an extension. Only the Atlanta Spirit.

I doubt Rick Sund will have many (if any) GM positions waiting for him after the season. I think our position is going to be his only option as a GM, but I can see a consultant job waiting for him, so it probably ends up coming down to money.

I think he's solid. He made a smart move to build a deeper bench. I'm sure he did it to help in the playoffs against CHI. However, without it, Horford's injury would have doomed us.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

I'm pretty mad at this, but I'd be wayyy more mad if/when they offer LD an extension
