Decade in Review

Post#1 » by Geaux_Hawks » Sun May 20, 2012 11:32 pm

Just doing a bit of revisionist history for the past decade, but wouldn't it have been great to have kept that pick we traded to LA to draft Amare, still draft Smith, kept Salim, and drafted Paul or Deron(no brainer)

Just think if ASG isn't afraid to lose Joe to free agency, which in return he isn't looking for a huge contract because we have such a good team and his age. I think they go over the tax to keep the team together and you have to think they would all take less money just to stay together. Something similar to how its looking in OKC right now.

1-Deron/Grievis Vazquez/Pargo
2-Joe/Marshon Brooks
3-Josh/Bah Moute/Steve Novak
4-Amare/Jonas Jerebko
5-Tiago Splitter/Zaza

the rest are guys I would have just drafted based on pre-draft analysis and me wanting them. I think Vazquez would be a solid back up. Brooks would be Joe's successor. Bah Moute and Novak would have been perfect role players. I like foreigners, so I would have kept my ear open for any guy making noise overseas. That team wins at least 2 rings and is in the ECF just about every year. Just something to play around with though.

If we're playing the "What If?" game, I just about every decision that former GM BK (I'll always know him as just this for many reasons... partially because made me think we were a fast food restaurant going against fine dining...) - I still can't get how terrible he was and the damage he did to this franchise. What if BK didn't back us into a situation where we had to spend $$ and ended up breaking apart our ownership group over the JJ signing causing possibly the worst black eye in NBA history for 3-4 years while that got sorted out? In '04, what if we had drafted Igoudala over Chills that year and still netted Josh Smith? In '05, what if we had traded with POR (who originally had the #3 pick and, IIRC, offered a future #1 along with that #3 for Marvin) and then had our selection between Deron and CP3? Also in '05, what if BK hadn't stuck to his guns on Salim Stoudamire and selected one of the HS'er with enough athleticism to actually play PG in the pros like Monta Ellis or local product Louis Williams? Or if we had selected one of the elite PGs in the 1st round, what if he would have went after one of the bigs in the 2nd ala Brandon Bass and Marcin Gortat? In '06, what if BK was actually shrewd enough to not completely tell everyone that we were going to overdraft Shelden Williams @ #5 and either traded down to select him or just took someone else? In '07, what if we hadn't completely backed ourselves against the wall and had to take a PG @ #11 due to the repeated failures of BK to get talent at the position and could free ourselves to select someone like Thad Young or Rodney Stuckey? And the absolute worst "what if": what if he stayed after we re-offered him the job? (Chills go down my spine on this one...)

Sund hasn't been so bad though. Sure, in retrospect, many of his FA re-signings have hurt, but he was actually applauded for Marvin's and Bibby's contract at the time. The Chills situation was really bad, but I thought that Sund handled it with class - at least to the public. JJ was just a hard situation for him that he had no way out of. We offered a deal that was a very fair deal before the last year of his previous contract, but JJ made it clear that he wanted to get paid and didn't care about the team winning. (Remember that this was at a time when many NBA superstars were taking less $$ than the max so teams could fill out their rosters.) If we lost him, we would have been immediately considered afterthoughts in the NBA world and all the work Sund had put into keeping Bibby and Marvin would have really been wasted. If we kept him, then we immediately would have the one of the worst contracts in the NBA on our hands and no financial flexibility on the roster since that's what JJ demanded. Sund was between a rock and a hard place here and simply chose one, but in all reality, either decision would have marred his tenure here. Honestly, considering all that Sund had to do to clean up the mess that BK left, he's really done an admiral job in keeping the ship sailing straight. Unfortunately, I think that after watching Paul Pierce Tebowing at center court during the pivotal Game 2, it's prolly best that we move on from Sund since now we need a makeover - not simply a caretaker.

More like a decade under the influence.

Can throw in the what if the Hawks didn't give Phoenix the pick that became Rondo and the pick that could have been either of Roy Hibbert or JaVale McGee for Joe?

What if Bob **** Sura didn't singlehandedly cost the team Dwight?

What if Sund had the "balls" to trade a conditional future pick to move up one spot and draft Ty Lawson instead of just selling them later on?

Can go on for days with this.
