I like Joe Johnson as a player but even with Haywood's bad contract I can't see the Mavs taking this deal.

I've actually heard whispers from a few places that Dallas might make a play for JJ ifthey strike out on Deron Williams (and Dwight Howard) by offering the contract of Lamar Odom (which can be bought out) ande Shawn Marion (which has only one more guaranteed year).

I would very much be okay with that.

That deal would be even worse for the Mavs. If they were going to trade for JJ (which I don't think they will) it would be the first deal mentioned, not one that includes Marion.

Cuban is not the spend wild person he used to be. Joe Johnson's deal doesn't make business sense, so I really don't think Cuban would take it on any terms. The reason I say it doesn't make sense is that it is a full max deal for a player with very poor marketing appeal. I said this before he was resigned that to be a full max player you have to add more value to the franchise than just your own court play. You either have to elevate the winning of the team to an extremely high level (Duncan?) or be highly marketable (James, Wade, Bryant). Ideally you do both. Joe is in that next level of player. He helps the team win, but not at that extremely high level that sells out arenas. His personality doesn't make him very marketable. He should be making the same as Josh and Al leaving room to field a team in the image of the Pistons last title team (the other problem is Marvin not playing up to the starting five level). Joe is being paid like Dirk Nowitzki, who is that marketable. Cuban is only going to pay someone that money if they provide that marketing punch and hopefully brings extremely high level of winning as Nowitzki winds down. Deron Williams fits that better because he's more recognizable and his position more greatly impacts the rest of the team. Dwight Howard is another player who fits that role.

The only thing that making a run at Roy Hibbert would likely do is drive up the price for Indiana to retain him. Which is good, someone needs to force them to pay.

I also don't understand the players being traded for in the suggestion. Odom would likely be bought out for the 2.4M his contract requires. Haywood (or Marion) becomes a possible amnesty target if needed to chase the players they want. Replacing them with Joe's contract would take Dallas out of the free agency sweepstakes (or at least limit them). No way they do that after letting Tyson Chandler walk to protect this cap room.
Going to donkey punch a leprechaun!
