Magic Johnson wants Smoove on Lakers

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed May 30, 2012 5:20 pm

Magic has absolutely no sway in the front office anymore, but it's an intriguing thought. They get younger and faster with Josh Smith and seeing as he operates further away from the basket on offense, he would compliment Bynum (in theory).

Magic suggests trading Gasol for us to get him, which actually works if we add in Marvin.

We get a legit post presence, NBA AllStar and two-time champion. We also get rid of Marvin.

I propose:

ATL Outgoing:
Josh Smith
Marvin Williams

ATL Incoming:
Pau Gasol
Josh McRoberts

Detroit Outgoing:
Charlie Villanueva

Detroit Incoming:
Marvin Williams

Lakers Outgoing:
Pau Gasol
Josh McRoberts

Lakers Incoming:
Josh Smith
Charlie Villanueva

Salary cap implications:

This gives us two guys making $20 million, which means we'd be relegeated (again) to filling the bench with has beens and no-names. But Pau's deal comes off the books after the 2014 season.
By then, JJ would almost be in the last year of his deal, making him infintely more tradeable as an expiring contract to a rebuilding team or a contender making a last ditch push.

On the court:
Pau as a 7footer paired with the rugged Horford mesh well in the front court and either can play center. JJ no longer is the primary option and we lose our dependency on jump shots every tim down the court.
We lose explosiveness and interior defense; but if we draft a guy like Fab Melo this year, we can still have a young shot blocker available off the bench.

In the locker room:
With a veteran team and three potential all-stars, I can't see any issues there.

Our defense may take a hit, so we'd need to sig a defensive SF like Pietrus or Matt Barnes.
But with Teague, JJ and Pietrus guarding opposing wings, it leaves less pressure on the big men.

This is a move that doesn't make us worse. Makes us more defined on offense. And allows us flexibility after two years.

McRoberts is filler for cap purposes, but can't be more worthless than Dampier or JCollins.

What do you guys think?

2 reasons minimum why we aren't getting Gasol:

1) Like was said earlier, the ASG isn't extending their salary limit ways for anybody....2 guys making 39M? No way in HAIL!!

2) Gasol is considered a Top 20 guy IMO. No way the Lakers settle for Josh in this one. It doesn't matter what Magic wants.

The ASG isn't interested in contending for a title. They are satisfied selling Kobe jerseys and being in the front row for Philips events. Once you get an understanding of that, you'll know what level of product you'll be seeing going forward.

-JJ, Gasol and Josh McRoberts would have a combined salary of $41.9 million next season.

-JJ, Smoove and Marvin have a combined salary of $41.2 million next season.

Basically: There's no difference in salary cap numbers!!!

1. We'd be adding minimal salary to our books.

2. LAL would be further motivated as having Josh Smith could provide further incentive for Dwight Howard to agree to a trade and extension to LA.
They also get cap savings if they choose

This is more of a question on whether WE'D be interested as Atlanta fans.

Remember, for 2012, there is only a cap difference of +$800,000. I'm sure we could just sell another 2nd round pick to offset that difference. Not like any of our 2nd rounders will actually play for us anyway.

I honestly don't give a sh*t about what Magic wants, the only way we trade Josh to LA is for Bynum, I'd rather let him walk at the end of his contract instead of trading for Gasol who really would put us in salary cap hell.

The money implications are not this coming season, but the year after. That's when Pau Gasol would result in a large luxury tax charge. Of course signing Josh to a max deal does about the same thing, so I don't see that as likely either.

Yeah more I think about trading josh and Marvin for paul would not be a bad idea. The only problem with this is next off-season the hawks would have would have to be an major tax payer next year. If the ownership would commit to that it would a great trade. the hawks would become title contenders for the next two years. And when Paul becomes a free agent we will be able to resign him for a lot lesser than what he is making now. I don't think asg is committed to winning a title. they want u to think they are but its all about turning profits for them. But if they were to add Pau I believe we will atleast make the eastern conference finals.
