Nobody can blame Ferry if things don't work out, you can only blame the GM for not trying, and Ferry is at least going to make an effort. it sounds logical, but you never know what Dwight and Chris Paul will do.
but Plan "B".... Andrew Bynum and Jeff Teague
hopefully the Hawks can resign Josh even if the Dwight thing falls through, but if it doesn't then it isn't such a big hit because the Hawks still have Horford. if something can't be worked out with Josh, although i think it will happen with Ferry, Hawks could use the extra cap on guys like Ellis, Iguodala, Tyreke, or Harden.
Bynum
Horford
Smoove
Jenkins
Teague
Hawks will still have alot of cap even if they over pay Bynum and could still add another quality player like Tony Allen, Dalembert, Pekovic, Splitter, DeJuan Blair.

Re: Plan "B".... Andrew Bynum
I was reviewing the '13 FAs not too long ago myself...
I do think a Bynum/Horford front court could be really good though. Sure, I'd prefer D12, but Bynum offers a lot of game as well and still has some upside. Also, with LAL burning up the rumor mill in their attempts to trump up interest in Gasol, I think there will be some tough decisions if they can't dump Gasol and someone offers Bynum the max next off-season. I think they know they'll always be tax payers as long as Kobe is there, but they have to at least try to stay somewhere close to the line. Man, it would be nice to see LAL lose a star due to financial considerations.
Another player that piques my interest would be Stephen Curry. GSW is sitting around $52M next year already. Kick in resigning Rush (who they're expected to match to a contract around $4-5M per) and they could be above the cap before the even look at Curry's contract... and Ferry loves him some shooters...

Dejuan Blair would be a perfect complement to Al and Josh. He has the strength to move even Cs off the block, as long as he does his work early.
Blair Pachulia Horford and Dalembert is tough and versatile and could carry even the weakest NBA backcourts. THen to add Smith who can put in All Star 2 way player at SF?
I like that as Plan 2B, because Bynum for $20 mil doesnt sound too appealing. He's got an ego that outweighs his winning ability and isn't a leader mentally or skills wise.

He'd be a viable option, I don't think Kobe's ego will accept his decline and a guy like Bynum may not take to kindly to hanging around any longer with a guy who's talking and taking shots as if his play still justifies it.

Are you sure you want to max him out though? He's had early injuries in his career and I don't think he has leadership qualities. I think it literally takes a vet like Kobe to keep him in line as well. Don't get me wrong, I love what he could bring to us and don't mind gambling on him, but his price tag will be steep.
Me personally, I'd go after, Paul and sign Nikola Pekovich. With Dwight, you have to run your offense through him, which isn't all that great because Howard isn't as skilled as people think. On top of that, it makes Smith less effective because he is actually more skilled and talented, but will force him(mindset) to go back to shooting jumpers.
With Pek, you get an assertive big , who likes to play with his back to the basket in the low post at the 5 that gives you different advantages and is much cheaper. With Paul running the point, he can get the ball in perfect positions to operate with it.

if he is healthy this year, then yes
but i'm also okay with Pekovic, but if Pek is just brought in, the Josh Smith has to be resign with the Hawks.

Healthy or not, I don't want to have to rely on Bynum. Kobe takes a lot of pressure off of Bynum and so does Gasol.
I'm pretty sure Smith re-signs with a good showing this year, plus the addition of Pek.

Re: Plan "B".... Andrew Bynum
Looking at what I believe to be the max we can offer them, it appears as if we can offer $51,433,431 to Smith, Paul and Bynum. That's $3,608,178 less than we'd have to offer the trio if Howard replaced Bynum. $51 million would leave us about $3 million away from being to keep Horford with the trio. Getting them to take one million less could be easier than getting Howard to take a pay cut.

Pekovic is a good call as well. Physical strong good finisher around the rim.
Blair has weight issues so he's probably not realistic guy you want to commit to.
