We already have Josh at that stage and I know this has been talked about all summer.
But do you see Danny as a gambler afte the LeBron debacle?
I always thought once Dwight made a decision, Danny was going to find a way to move Josh and build around Al and Jeff. I also haven't heard if Danny has talked to any of the remaining core except Josh.
I do think Danny wants to make a splash this summer, and with the extra PG and extra SGs, we do have a shot a doing something big.
I gotta think Danny would be willing to take on Dwight, Josh-frienship or no friendship.
What becomes tough to imagine is getting Josh, Dwight, JT and Zaza re-signed in the same offseason.
Wherever we head this year, I'm just happy there's a non-Sund approach to the upcoming season. That guy is at best average in his work and the best thing he could do was bring in min vets. That's not exactly on the forefront of a team that wants to contend.

Re: Will Danny take on a rental?
My question is always and continues.
What can you get for Josh Smith that makes the team better? He is the best rebounder, shot blocker, off the ball defender gets 4 assist again a few steals and can average 20+ a game.
You lose way too much. Smith/Horford is a better front cournt than 90% of the league.

I would have to disagree with you there.
Josh has never averaged more rebounds than AL when they both play a full (or mostly full) season. In fact, AL Horford has led the team in rebounding every full season since he was drafted.
Josh has never in 7 years averaged 20+ ppg.
He is a great shot blocker, but I think a true center could match his 1.7 blocks per game and provide better post defense considering Josh is only 220 pounds. (Which, btw, is less than AL, Joe Johnson, or Marvin Williams. Think about that. Our SG last season was actually bigger and stronger than our PF.)

Re: Will Danny take on a rental?
As far a what we could get:
Kevin Love has expressed frustration at never making the playoffs in MIN. His scoring and rebounding numbers are superior 2 Josh's. Josh plus draft picks could be enticing to the T-Wolves
Rudy Gay has been in the rumor mill for a few months. His scoring numbers have been consistently higher than Smoove's and he has more offensive ability.
OKC has great wing players, but their frontcourt fails to put up offensive numbers consistently. I'm sure that Josh (Or AL for that matter) plus Teague and a draft pick would be enough to at least start a conversation for Harden (or Westbrook-though that might be wishful thinking.) I'm of the belief that Smith and Teague could net us Harden and Ibaka. Which gives us defense, shot blocking, three point shooting, transition scoring & ball-handling between the two of them.
Detroit has long coveted Josh. Had we been proactive, we probably could have traded Josh for their #9 pick (and the draft rights to Andre Drummond) and a productive veteran like Ben Gordon.
There are options out there. And I'm not one who believes one player has to replace all of Josh's production.

Re: Will Danny take on a rental?
Smith is one of 2 Forwards that ranked top 10 in blocks last year. Before that, he was at least top 3. How many centers consistently could give you that, that is a legit possibility of acquiring? Smith may not have averaged 20 a game in a season, but he will come closer than al Horford. Everyone(including Al) should realize, he is a 15/10 C with a great mid-range. Trying to move him to the 4 is only hurting yourself more than seeing Smith jack up random jumpers, unless smith is at the 3.

Your last statement is so factual about the reality of Josh going back to the 4. It's his best position, allows his strengths to come out, yet his offseason regimen more than likely consists of working on slimming down and working on his face up jumper. We saw that last year, and its not going to be the way to get this team deep in the playoffs. I think Josh wants to be more like Bosh than
Stoudamire. If Josh stays here, we are going to feel that pain of him leading a break, his ways of throwing away possessions, and more long jumpers.
If that is what we have to look forward to, then Josh should be sent out if we can't reel in D12. I'll put Al at the PF with Zaza and go find a better quality SF.

Re: Will Danny take on a rental?
I agree with TD.
Josh Smith could be enough to wrangle Rudy Gay.
Horford at PF, Gay at SF could be nice combination.

Why does Memphis do that?

Re: Will Danny take on a rental?
Starting Josh and Horford is undersized. No way around that. Josh leans towards PF, but can play spot SF minutes. I think if we start both of them, we need a legit, big SF next to them (someone like Gallinari maybe) and a big backup with length at C and/or PF.
Honestly, if Josh's ego would allow it and he would quit shooting jumpers, I think he could be a pretty mean McHale style 6th man who sticks in the post on offense and blocks shots on defense. But I really doubt that's happening.

I don't think Josh fulfills what Memphis needs. Their big need is in the frontcourt and they're expensive. They have needs at the 2 more than the frontcourt.
Moving Gay would simply be to save cash. Mayo was a cash casualty as well.
They are Bayless, Tony Allen and Selby trying to give them minutes there.
Gay is too expensive for us IMO. I don't like his big numbers. I want an all-pro at that cost.....Love or D12 fits that description.

Gay has been rumored to be on the trading block for over a year now. Consider it a salary dump for Memphis in the same way we had a salary dump for Joe Johnson. Remember, Memphis made their big post-season run in 2011 with Rudy Gay sidelined.
Zach Randolph is older and coming off an injury. Smoove can play SF next to Randolph or play PF next to Marc Gasol.
A MARC Gasol/Smoove frontcourt would be a great defensive tandem. They complement each other on offense fairly well also.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. We start an undersized Center. And have the nerve to pair him with an undersized PF as well.
They're both young and athletic, but both have trouble playing man defense against bigger, stronger, longer players.
Josh as a 6th man could literally play all 5 positions over the course of a season. (Hell, he already insists on running point on too many fastbreaks. Much to the chagrin of his teammates and coaching staff.) Think back to the role Lamar Odom played in his last couple of years with the Lakers.
