Al Thorton....whats with him

Post#1 » by Rip2137 » Thu Aug 9, 2012 2:24 am

He has stayed pretty consistant throughout his career...his minutes have fluctuated but besides that, he still seems like a solid player.

Why can't he get a job in the league. Am I missing something?

I would love to give him or Josh Howard a look at the SF.

What I've seen from him is that he's an inconsistent chucker with little offensive skill. Didn't help that he came into the league at a late age and he certainly never managed to improve much. They've been worse talents in the league but at least they managed to find more team specific niches such as shooting or defending but ole' Al never managed to really curtail his individual game from taking shots like Kobe and dunking here and there.

Howard is talking to the Jazz, but with Marvin, Haywood, and Millsap there at the three 3, I don't see why.

As for Thorton being a inconsistant chucker, his shooting percetnage increased every year and settled at around 46 percent. If my chucker is shooting 46-47 percent from the field, then I am happy.

Of course, i don't actually think he is a chucker and don't see how you could come to that conclusion.

If I was living in the stone ages I'd use FG% as an indicator of scoring efficiency, but I don't. He posted above league average TS% only twice in his career yet has a career usage rate in the 20s. Yea yeah, you're not big on advanced stats but they can be quite telling on why certain guys are unemployed and haven't contributed to winning programs.

Al Thornton has a lot of flaws in his game. Mediocre defender, poor handle, okay finisher despite being a very good dunker, poor passer...

I mean he's not the worst player in the league by any means, but he's definitely not starter tier or even solid rotation.
