What the Hawks offense will look like in 2013

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Fri Aug 24, 2012 12:55 pm

Man, Hawks fans...this place is dead.

I've seen a fair amount of articles the last week or so with analysis, speculation, mention about the hometown team. This one from TrueHoop on ESPN is a really in-depth look at what we can expect from our revised roster.
The consensus I keep reading is that Jeff Teague is likely the key to our new wide open style.

I still suspect that Devin Harris and even Lou Williams will have bigger impacts, but the system and style of play seems evident based on statements by D Ferry and the types of players he's acquired.

Excerpts:

The system
The fundamental purpose of a spread pick-and-roll offense is to open up the middle of the court. That’s the space that is the most difficult for help defenses to account for.

Typically, two or three shooters align themselves along the 3-point line (often in the corners, to make helping off even harder) while the point guard and big man run a pick-and-roll in the middle of the court. As the screener rolls to the rim, the other big man flashes up from the baseline to the top of the key.

Though he doesn’t have to be Atlanta’s best offensive player, Teague, would be the most important piece in a pick-and-roll based offense. A passable 3-point shooter, Teague has a burst to the bucket that rivals elite athletes like John Wall and Derrick Rose. Because it takes only a sliver of daylight for Teague to end up with two points at the rim, his explosiveness puts real pressure on the entire defense.

High on the High-Low
Al Horford and Josh Smith might be a little undersized for a starting front court, but they complement each other wonderfully in a pick-and-roll offense. Criticisms about Smith’s shot selection are deserved, but there’s no doubt he is one of the elite finishers in the NBA. Even though he’s listed at 6-foot-9, Smith stretches the floor vertically in a manner similar to 7-footers like Tyson Chandler. The threat of Smith catching on the move, whether it’s a lob or a bounce pass en route to the rim, can cause defenses to sink into the paint even before the ball is passed his way.

Meanwhile, Horford (a skilled finisher himself) is a deadly pick-and-pop player who can command attention even 18 feet from the rim. What’s more, both bigs are good passers and ball handlers that can be trusted to find cutters and shooters as the defense scrambles.

Questions to ponder:

1. Which lead guard do you predict will have the most success running the pick and roll: Teague, Devin Harris or Louis Williams?
2. Which big man is best equipped to run the PnR: Horford and his reliable mid range game or J-Smoove with his adept passing and power finishes?
3. With all these shooters on the floor at once, how bad is our defense going to be?
4. Who gets the start in our revamped backcourt?

1) As far as scoring out of the pick and roll, I know that Jeffrey and Louis are monsters with the ball in their hands. Jeffrey getting to the rim and Louise either knocking down a jumper, getting to the rim or drawing a foul on either will be tough to handle. Devin I'd imagine is the best passer out of the pick and roll though but I haven't seen any reports on his rankings according to synergy but overall the stats state that he is the best passer amongst all of them. Tough but I'd say they'd all be very very good but Louis and Devin offer better experience so they might latch on quicker.

2) They both are extremely capable in the pick and roll but I'd give the edge to Al because he's more well rounded at it. He also possesses passing, surprisingly has been the better finisher at the rim (higher FG%, less assisted) and he also possesses greater size and the ability to counter with his jumper.

3) I don't think they'd be as big of a drop off on defense. From last year, yes, but that was the highest the current core has ever been ranked. Only two of the shooters can occupy the floor at a time so that leaves Jeffrey, Al and Josh still as capable defenders. Zaza was a beast last year despite peoples' opinions on his defense, Louis is surprisingly capable too and Devin once upon a time was one of the peskiest defenders in the entire league.
Ferry also brought this up in a recent AJC article
“I would say probably a wing that can compete defensively at a high level would be a good thing to be able to add at some point,” Ferry said.

So clearly he sees that as something to address beyond options on the current roster.

4) From Ferry's words and the Atkinson hiring it appears that the team is all in on Jeffrey and that it's his job to lose so he will be the initial starter at the point. Baring another trade Korver and Morrow will interchange at the 3 in order to run this offense properly and I have Jenkins as my darkhorse to start at the 2 also thanks to the Atkinson hiring. He's stated ball handling and defense have been his main focus over the offseason and he's already beginning to workout with Korver so I imagine that would breed some familiarity for them in lineups together.
