Any interest in DeJuan Blair?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Aug 7, 2012 3:44 pm

Blair's offseason improvements could land him a more prominent role somewhere other than San Antonio. He has one more year on his rookie contract, but indications are the Spurs are considering trading Blair after advancing to the Western Conference final without needing much from him. The Spurs signed forward Boris Diaw to a two-year contract this summer. Diaw started all 14 postseason games in 2012 after arriving in San Antonio via a midseason trade. "Hopefully, I stay a Spur, but if it doesn't happen, life moves on," Blair said. "They've got me on the trade market and they'll do the best to get me in the greatest situation possible." http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/spo ... er-647932/

His defensive liabilities because of his size hurt him. He is a great rebounder and has a nice offensive game, but he is still undersized, and isn't particularly good at any part of the defenseive game.

His offensive rebounding alone intriges me though.

He is short but he uses his bulk and athleticism to make up for it on both sides of the floor.
A frontline of Horford, Dejuan Blair, and Josh Smith would be versatile and exciting to watch and actually make the small frontline less predictable and actually could work. Unlike 1-dimensional guys like Korver or Marvin.
Lots of potential in him. He did not stay in shape because he says of minutes.

Also there is the obvious Ferry Connection. Ivan, Zaza, Al? Hawks will not be getting punked.
And of course he's expiring next summer.

Now having said all that we will not get Dejuan Blair, Korver will set a career high in minutes played, and Marvin will likely go off in Utah etc. etc.

Have you watched Blair play defense? He doesn't make up for it. he is bad laterally and doesn't play the pick and roll well, he seldom gets out on shooters and isn't that good on the block defensively without fouling.

He is a great rebounder (starters minutes, I honestly think he would come close to leading the league) and has a nice offensive game with his back to the basket, but the guy seriously can't jump. He can't block shots, he barely challenges them.

Boris Diaw took his spot because Boris can play D. He can't.

Waiving Scott (Josh Powell...the 2nd coming) or Jordan Williams wouldn't be that big of a loss. Blair is better than both of them. Combined.

He is overall better than Ivan, but I think what Johnson would bring would be more important to the team.

What would we trade for him though? I don't want to give up anything of value for a rental of Blair.

Just a note - he typically plays very well vs OKC.

Had his first 20/20 game against them, and he scored 22 in the last OKC/SAS regular season matchup.

Willie Green's trade exception
"The value for the Hawks in the deal is gaining a trade exception in the amount of Green’s first-year salary with the Clippers, which wasn’t immediately known.

Update: According to ESPN.com’s John Hollinger, the exception is worth between $1.65 million and $2.75 million."
