Anybody got a scouting report on James Anderson?

Post#1 » by parson » Sat Aug 25, 2012 3:36 am

This is from Spurs Nation:
James Anderson headed to Atlanta?
Posted on August 24, 2012 at 10:10 pm by Dan McCarney in James Anderson
If Danny Green's tweet is accurate, James Anderson is no longer a Spur.

So, does anyone here know anything about him?

From the Spurs' board (link: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1156175 ) I see the following:
.....He's had the same foot injury problem since high-school resulting in a plate, a screw and a pin in his left foot.
.....Some think he's good but got beaten out by Gary Neal and Danny Green.
.....Others think he can't shoot.

DraftExpress is worrisome, yet encouraging (http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jam ... rson-5106/ ):
.... He's not athletic.
.... He's not a good defender.

But they really like him otherwise, however.

Just taking a chance on a young kid who was a 1st round pick not too long ago. He had a good college career, but never got it going with SAS. BCS: Ferry knows something that 28 teams don't. WCS and Realistic outcome: he's a young option for the end of the bench who might have some upside. Nice move - Very little risk; medium reward.

He showed flashes of being a good player before his injury.

Nevertheless the Hawks have a pretty big hole at the wings.

Finally we grab a young wing with some upside. I loved Andersen at OSU.

Interesting thought: Anderson has a reach of 8'8", which is 1.5" more than Korver's. Anderson's vertical reach is 11'7.5", which is 5.5" higher than Korver.

Instead of seeing Anderson as a 2, we may have our defensive 3 who can handle the faster 3s.

Unsettling question: why is a guy so acclaimed as a shooter posting a career 38% from the field and 32.5% from 3 in 2 seasons? Can we blame his injuries? Does Ferry - being from SA - have inside info that he's now healed?

Ferry knows him way better than we do, he might see something special in him

Great signing. Anderson is a big SF/SG who has range and won't get in the way of Teague and Smith.

Good signing, Ferry in his short 2 months has done more than Rick Sund has over his career

Some posts are full of it

Anderson is a big SG, undersized SF

Measured in at just under 210 lbs. Doesn't look any bigger

able to catch and shoot off or straight line drive, off of ball handlers or ball movement

Mediocre in transition.
Mediocre ball handling.

Anderson's vertical reach is 11'7.5"... Which is 6 inches higher than Kawhi Leonard.
I don't know why that matters. Since Leonard's obviously the more capable basketball player.

Anderson's wingspan is guard level. He doesnt have the length to hassle anyone but mediocre/backup SFs ie why Popovich played him at SG then booted him when he couldn't shoot.
And he's guard height at 6'5.75. Shorter than Brandon Roy. 1 inch taller than what Wade and Harden measured. Coupled with his lack of length. He's not a defender at SF.

The hope would be his lack of handles is hidden at SF and straight line drives + his quickness = more points. Hes strictly invited for offense.

Ferry Sees Anderson as a 2, who may score against slower 3s.

Epilogue:
1) I don't see how Anderson has ever handled "the faster 3s".
2) The faster 3s? Who are they? Iguodala (in the West playing SG now), Lebron and ... 30 yo Gerald Wallace? I mean thats a huge reach. We brought in James Andersen to guard Lebron. If he was even remotely capable he'd have been signed already, not invited.

The "faster 3s" are usually guards that play the 3. Like James Andersen. James Andersen is not capable of guarding (or scoring on) Lebron.

Granger, Pierce, Carmelo, Luol Deng Josh Smith and even Gerald Wallace. Are not what you call fast 3s. They're big heavy 3s.

This James "no name" Andersen, a career shooting guard, is who people are latching onto as a defensive ace, over Josh Smith.

If a Lakers fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a Celtics fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a Spurs fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a Bulls fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a Magic fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a 76ers fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a Knicks fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.
If a Nets fan have to sign Josh Smith or James Andersen to play the 3 for them. Josh Smith.

But when it comes to Hawks fans... "Go Ferry!" "
After a long tradition of Mo Evans, Marvin Williams, Josh Childress, Kirk Hinrich, Mario West, we got our defensive ace! James Andersen who Popovich played some at the position but kicked him to the curb for a rookie Kawhi Leonard! But LD will develop him because..." and
"James Andersen will guard the faster 3s (Lebron). Trevor Ariza of the Wizards? Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of the Bobcats?"

I'm sorry but yeah Hawks want to prove naysayers wrong but come on. This is really really stupid and an exercise in foolish pride. There are no fast SFs in our playoffs picture.

I'm sorry but where is the post where people said it was a choice between Josh Smith or James Anderson?

As a matter of fact, I don't see where "people" called him a "defensive ace". You just made up an argument and argued against it for over a paragraph. The only one who called him a defensive ace was YOU.

Right now, we have Kyle Korver penciled in as the starting SF. All parson(basically) said is that he would be a upgrade defensively over Korver.

Switch to decaf dude.

So what parson (basically) said is what he basically said "Instead of seeing Anderson as a 2, we may have our defensive 3 who can handle the faster 3s[Lebron].

The point is There aren't many fast 3s. There are heavy 3s in the East that would eat both Korver and James Andersen alive, on offense and/or defense.

Hawks keep using stopgap players at every position
& trying to convince themselves that players are better than they are. Its a joke.

James Andersen is the latest stopgap in a long succession of stopgap wings. If you want defense you go with Smith and Stevenson.

I'll take parson at his word. What you're saying is a whole tangential argument that warrants its own post. Thanks, but I'll focus on what parson actually said Andersen handling faster sfs.

What faster sf is Andersen capable of "handling"? Lebron?

Most NBA franchises logic would be stick Smith there. Then if youre down a big man add another big man. But no... not Atlanta. Seen it b4. Sign a wing and then come playoffs they got no competent big men to match up.

They sure are trailblazers..Flip Murray, Kirk Hinrich, Kyle Korver, James Anderson, Mo Evans, Marvin Williams.

@Parson:
Paul Pierce is not a "faster" small forward, but with James Andersen at the 3 the Celtics would tear the Hawks another classic playoff [fill in blank and get banned]. Pacers with Granger, Gerald Wallace with Nets, Carmelo with Knicks.

Josh is the answer to those guys. We're fine with Korver, Stevemson (attitude may be an issue), Smith.
Heck Im not even sure James Andersen can guard Mike Dunleavy or Carlos Delfino. Unless Andersen is blocking shots rebounding and defending at Lebron level he's not doing much for Hawks the Eastern Conf.

Ruhiel - brother - breathe.
Breeeeeaaaaaathhhhhhhe.

We're talking about a backup SF/SG why MAY be able to help us defensively at SF .... a little better than Korver might. I just wanted to know if anyone had seen him play and could give a scouting report.

Hmmmmm, if that's what there is to be upset about, maybe this Hawks team is better than I thought.

Yes he's probably going to be a little better defensively than Korver. But with less experience and size the only thing he has going for him is athleticism and thats not what you said.

The point is there's heavy slow SFs that would make having him on the roster problematic. Moreso than just keeping what we already have.

You misspoke. There are no faster 3s that Andersen can handle.

No, I did not. If Anderson is faster than Korver - and I have paint that dries faster - then HE will be more likely to defend the "faster 3s" .... isn't that logical? Anderson not only has athleticism over Korver but he is longer and has a greater vertical reach (you misspoke when you said "the only thing he has going for him is athleticism). It is reasonable to assume he'll defend "the faster 3s" before Korver does. His length, strength and speed make him the most likely to defend "the faster 3s" than anyone else we presently have. Think of it this way: SOMEbody is going to have to defend "the faster 3s." Doesn't mean he'll make the All-Defense team, but somebody on our roster will have to run out there and try. Anderson appears better equipped than Korver.

You're arguing some private agenda that has little to do with what I posted. I don't have to anticipate what you're going to take my sayings to mean. YOU have to understand what I posted. I'm sorry if I confused you ... and I'm sure it's entirely something I said .... but a lot of guys got what I was saying, that this guy could be a nice defensive 3 to come off the bench.

And, on the other hand, he might not even make the team.

All valid [basically inarguable] points. But tangential. You're dancing around the issue I brought up.
I'm only arguing with your original statement parson. So I'm asking... who are the "faster 3s" that he [Andersen] can handle?

Names?
I've not heard about the "faster 3s" before.

The majority of 3s that have given the Hawks problems are guys that LD should have sicced Josh Smith on and are 6'8 230+ on average and aren't considered fast compared to Smith.

Can you name even 5 of the "faster 3s"?

Then you or I can admit who overlooked what and was wrong. : D
If I were wrong I'd say "I was wrong". Not in hostile way but I'd apologize and say the Hawks could use someone to guard the faster 3s such as [Player A, B, C].
